Preview

Sydney Sixers will take on Melbourne Renegades in the second match of the Big Bash League 2023-24 on Friday (December 8) at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Sixers finished in second place last season with 10 wins in 14 games. They lost the challengers game against Brisbane Heat by four wickets after posting a mere total of 116 runs on the board. Renegades won seven out of 14 league stage matches and were in third place in the points tally. Their campaign ended after losing the knockout match against the Heat.

The Sixers have won 12 out of 17 games against so far in BBL. Sixers have been a dominant force against this opponent and have won a total of seven previous matches. The Renegades last won a match against the Sixers during the 2018-19 season.

Moises Henriques will lead the Sixers again this season. Daniel Christian announced his retirement from T20 cricket after last season. Tom Curran has replaced him in the squad. A few changes have been made in the bowling unit as well. Joel Davies, a 20-year-old spinner, has been brought in from Sydney Thunder. Mitchell Perry, who played for Melbourne Renegades during the 2020-21 season of the tournament, has been picked. Mickey Edwards, Chris Jordan, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Nathan Lyon have been released from last season’s squad.

Nic Maddinson will lead the Renegades again this season. He suffered an ACL injury last season and was replaced by Aaron Finch. Will Sutherland has been appointed the vice-captain of the team. Joe Clarke and Quinton de Kock have been added to the batting unit by the team. Martin Guptill, Peter Handscomb, Marcus Harris, Andre Russell, Zak Evans, Akeal Hosein, David Moody, Jack Prestwidge, Corey Rocchiccioli and Sam Harper were released. Adam Zampa has moved to the Renegades from Melbourne Stars in a trade deal. The Stars got Sam Harper in return. Nathan Lyon bid adieu to a decade-long career with the Sixers and will play for the Renegades this season. Peter Siddle also made a switch from Adelaide Strikers and will lead the Renegades’ pace attack.
