10 facts about Sudeep Tyagi: Sudeep Tyagi was considered the next best thing in Indian Cricket when the, then, Uttar Pradesh fast bowler made his debut for India. With the ability to bowl regularly above 140kph, Sudeep was another of the young breed of fast bowler that India has been producing in the last few years. Although, regular injuries prevented the youngster to stake his claim in the Indian team, there’s still hope that he could make a comeback with a good season in the first class cricket.
On the occasion of his 26th birthday, here are 10 facts about Sudeep Tyagi:
1. Birth:
Sudeep Tyagi was born on 17th September 1989 in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
2. Early days and First Class debut:
Sudeep Tyagi burst into the first class scene after he was spotted by Mohammed Kaif in the nets. In the absence of Shalabh Srivastava, who had drifted to the ICL, Kaif played a gamble by including Tyagi into the Uttar Pradesh lineup and the gamble paid dividend when Tyagi finished his debut game with a 10-wicket haul.
3. A brilliant debut season:
Sudeep followed the 10-wicket haul against Orissa with 9 wickets against Andhra Pradesh in the next game. The fast bowler finished his Debut Ranji season with 41 wickets; the highest in the country in that season.
4. IPL call up:
That kind of performance in the domestic circuit was surely going to attract interest from the IPL teams. Finally, the young fast bowler was included in the Chennai Super King setup in the following IPL season.
5. Injuries:
An unfortunate stress fracture in the back prevented the fast bowler to miss the whole IPL altogether while, he also missed the most of the 2008-09 domestic season due to the injury.
6. Re-emergence:
The fast bowler re-emerged to the scene next year as he made his IPL debut with Chennai Super Kings, before picking up 14 wickets in 6 games in the India A tour of Australia. A national call-up was just a matter of time by then!
7. Debut for India:
Sudeep Tyagi made his debut for India in the 5th ODI against Sri Lanka. The venue was Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi. The youngster got the prize scalp of Kumar Sangakkara as his first wicket in the ODIs. Not a bad start, eh? Unfortunately, the match was abandoned after the Umpires deemed the pitch unsafe.
8. Last ODI for India:
The young pacer played his last ODI for India against South Africa at Ahmedabad, Feb 27, 2010. Sudeep conceded 59 runs in 8 overs that ended with the Proteas winning the game by 90 runs. Subsequently, the Uttar Pradesh fast bowler was dropped from the India squad, and to this date, the game remains his last involvement with the national side.
9. Highlights:
There are various moments in the young pacer’s career that could be termed as the highlight; be it his 10-wicket haul in debut game for Uttar Pradesh or his first wicket of Kumar Sangakkara in ODIs. But, the one wicket that led the world cricket to roll their eyes and recognize his talent was the peach of a delivery that he castled AB De Villiers with in the 2009 season of IPL, the very first ball. The fact that it was on a grand stage led the people, all round the world, recognize his talent and accuracy with the ball.
10. Playing for Saurashtra:
With limited game time in the Uttar Pradesh Ranji team, Sudeep Tyagi opted to play for Saurashtra instead of his home side in the 2014-15 Ranji Season. As Saurashtra were looking for a fast bowler, Tyagi seized this opportunity to claim his place in the lineup. A national call-up still hasn’t arrived for Sudeep, but a good Ranji season this time around could definitely help him stake his claim into the Indian side.
