The number of matches held at these grounds, combined with the type of pitches on offer have accounted for massive scores from teams and individuals alike. Here’s a look at 10 Grounds where most Test runs have been scored: 10. Brisbane Cricket Ground, Australia – 59,260: Brisbane Cricket Ground, Gabba. (Photo Source: Getty Images) The Brisbane Cricket Ground, commonly known as the Gabba, is a major sports stadium in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland. It is named after the suburb of Woolloongabba, in which it is located. The first cricket match was held on the site on 19 December 1896, between Parliament and The Press. The ground has hosted athletics, Australian Rules football, baseball, concerts, cricket, cycling, rugby league, rugby union, soccer and pony and greyhound races. The Gabba was the first Australian venue to host an International T20 match. 58 Test matches have been played at this ground. The total number of runs scored here is 59,260. The home side has won 36 while a touring side has won on 8 occasions. The ground has witnessed 13 draws and 1 tie. The highest individual score here is 259* by Michael Clarke in 2012. 9. Trent Bridge was first used as a cricket ground in the 1830s. The first recorded cricket match was held on an area of ground behind the Trent Bridge Inn in 1838. Trent Bridge hosted its first Test match in 1899, for England playing against Australia. 61 Test matches have been played at this ground. The total number of runs scored here is 60,043. The home side has won 22 while a touring side has won 16 matches. The ground has witnessed 23 draws and the highest individual score of 278 by Dennis Compton in 1954. 8. Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad and Tobago (West Indies) – 60,187: Queen’s Park Oval stadium. Privately owned by the Queen’s Park Cricket Club, it is currently the largest capacity cricket ground in the West Indies with seating for about 18,000. It has hosted more Test matches than any other ground in the Caribbean. Considered by many players, journalists and critics as one of the most picturesque cricket venues, it first hosted a Test match in February 1930 when England toured the Caribbean though it had previously hosted many first-class tours as early as 1897. 59 Test matches have been played at this ground. It was the venue for the first ever Ashes Test to be held in England in July 1884 thus becoming the second English ground, after The Oval, to stage Test cricket. Old Trafford has a reputation for unpredictable weather. Old Trafford is the only ground in England where a Test match has been abandoned without a ball being bowled, twice in 1890 and 1938, though before 5-day Test matches were introduced. 76 Test matches have been played at this ground. The total number of runs scored here is 67,571. The home side has won 26 while a touring side has won 14 matches. A neutral side has won 1 Test here. The ground has witnessed 35 draws. The highest individual score here is 189* by Sir Vivian Richards in 1984. 6. It is the home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Leeds Rhinos rugby league team and Yorkshire Carnegie rugby union team. There are two separate grounds: Headingley Carnegie Cricket Stadium and Headingley Carnegie Rugby Stadium. The first Test held at the cricket stadium was on the 29th June 1899 between England and Australia. The ground witnessed Sir Donald Bradman’s innings of 334 in the 1930 Ashes Test which included a record 309 runs on the first day. 74 Test matches have been played at this ground. The total number of runs scored here is 70,008. The home side has won 31 while a touring side has won 24 matches. A neutral side has won 1 Test here. The ground has witnessed 18 draws. The stadium is mostly used for cricket and football, but also plays host to rugby league, rugby union, soccer, and concerts. The first Test match played at the Oval was held from 12–16 December, 1884; England beat Australia by eight wickets. 74 Test matches have been played at this ground. The total number of runs scored here is 89,309. The home side has won 38, while a touring side has won 17 matches. The ground has witnessed 19 draws and a highest individual score of 299* by Sir Don in 1932. 4. Kennington Oval, London – 94,879: Kennington Oval, London, (England 18 matches 1884-1929). It is always referred to as ‘The Oval’, and not ‘the Oval’. It was the first ground in England to host international Test cricket in September 1880; a match which England won by 5 wickets against Australia. The final Test match of the English season is traditionally played here. 98 Test matches have been played at this ground. The total number of runs scored here is 94,879. The home side has won 39, while a touring side has won 21 matches. The ground has witnessed 38 draws and a highest individual score of 364 by Sir Len Hutton in 1938. 3. Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia – 103,549: (© Getty Images) The SCG is the home ground for the New South Wales Blues cricket team, the Sydney Sixers of the Big Bash League and the Sydney Swans Australian Football League club. The first Test was played at the SCG between 17 February and 21 February 1882 between the Aussies and England which the home side won. 103 Test matches have been played at this ground. The total number of runs scored here is 103,549. The home side has won 57, while a touring side has won 28 matches. The ground has witnessed 18 draws and a highest individual score of 329* Michael Clarke in 2012. 2. It is the 10th-largest stadium in the world and has the tallest light towers of any sporting venue. It was the venue for the world’s first Test cricket match in 1877, between Australia and England. The annual Boxing Day Test match is one of the MCG’s most popular events. Referred to as ‘the spiritual home of Australian rules football’, it hosts AFL matches in the winter. 108 Test matches have been played at this ground. The total number of runs scored here is 108850. The home side has won 62, while a touring side has won 30 matches. The ground has witnessed 16 draws and a highest individual score of 307 Robert Cowper in 1966. 1. It is Located in St John’s Wood, London. Named after its founder, Thomas Lord, it is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). The ground celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2014. To mark the occasion, a 50 over match was played on 5th July between Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) XI, captained by Sachin Tendulkar, and Rest of the World XI led by Shane Warne. 131 Test matches have been played at this ground. The total number of runs scored here is 127,097. The home side has won 51, while a touring side has won 30 matches. A neutral side has won 2 Tests here. 48 matches have ended in a draw and Graham Gooch’s 333 in 1990 is the highest individual score here.
