10 Players who have played the most consecutive ODIs

The ODI format has been the prime form of cricket that has been played in the past few years. The players too have evolved with time, making them more adaptable to pressure situations and playing limited overs cricket. Being an integral part of the ODI side is perhaps one of the biggest honors one can have. The trust in the ability and capability goes on to add confidence and longevity to the player and his subsequent career. That said, here is a list of players who have played the most consecutive ODIs for their national side. 10. Mark Boucher – 120: South African Mark Boucher. (Photo by ALEXANDER JOE/AFP/Getty Images) South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher represented the Proteas in 120 ODIs from October 2002 to July 2007. Arguably South Africa’s best wicketkeeper of all time, Boucher played some memorable knocks during his time. He was forced into a rather premature retirement after being struck in the eye in a tour match against an English county side. Boucher’s 120 ODI streak came to an end after he was dropped for the tour of England. In his 120 matches, Boucher scored 2239 runs at an average of 32.44. He also made 11 half centuries during that time. 9. Alastair Campbell – 121: ALASTAIR CAMPBELL/ ZIMBABWE (Photo by David Munden/Popperfoto/Getty Images) Zimbabwe opener Alastair Campbell was an integral member of the side prior to the selection controversy. For 7 long years from 1993 to 2000, Campbell was a permanent member of the Zimbabwean squad. An injury saw his ODI streak broken as he missed the rest of the C&W series against and the subsequent Nat West series in England. Campbell made 3086 runs in the 121 matches played including 3 centuries. 8. Brendon McCullum – 122: Brendon McCullum. (© Getty Images) Since his selection in 2002, Brendon McCullum has been difficult to leave out of the side. The former Kiwi skipper who recently retired from international cricket played 122 consecutive ODIs from 2004 to 2010. Following a dip in his batting form, McCullum was replaced by Peter McGlashan for the home series against Australia. He was recalled to the side later that year for the tour of Bangladesh. McCullum scored 3048 runs in the 122 ODIs played. 7. Mahela Jayawardene – 122: Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene. (Photo by JEWEL SAMAD/AFP/Getty Images) Former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene was the mainstay of the Sri Lankan batting since his debut. Incidentally, Jayawardene had previously played 119 matches in a row from 1999 to 2003 before bettering his streak, by playing 122 matches from 2005 to 2009. Jayawardene was rested for the 5th ODI between India and Sri Lanka at the Feroze Shah Kotla, and that ended his 122-match streak. The match was abandoned due to unplayable pitch conditions. Mahela made 3415 runs in those 122 ODIs. 6. Mohammed Azharuddin – 126: Mohammad Azharuddin. (© Getty Images) Former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin’s record of 126 ODIs is a tremendous feat. Azhar has been dropped just once in his entire career in 1997, when he was left out of the final 4 ODIs against New Zealand, handing the captaincy to Sachin Tendulkar. The classy Hyderabadi made a return to the side in the Pepsi Asia Cup the same year in Sri Lanka. 5. Richie Richardson – 132: Richie Richardson. Richardson was left out for just the one game against Sri Lanka at Sharjah as Desmond Haynes took over the captaincy from him. Richardson returned for the following match against Pakistan, which the Windies won by 6 wickets. He has been dropped for just the one game in his entire ODI career. Richie Richardson scored 3704 runs during his 132 matches streak. 4. Shaun Pollock – 133: Shaun Pollock. (Photo Source: AFP) Shaun Pollock’s ability to swing the ball as well as his leadership skills saw most South African selectors build the team around him. He did not miss a single ODI for half a decade from 2000 to 2005. Subsequently was rested in the 3rd and the 4th ODI against Zimbabwe at home. Pollock made his comeback two matches later against the West Indies at Kingston. He picked up 174 wickets during this time. 3. Hansie Cronje – 162: Hansie Cronje. (© Getty Images) Perhaps the most infamous name in South African cricket post-apartheid, the late Hansie Cronje was one of the best players to have been produced by South Africa. Cronje missed just one match since September 1993. He was rested in the 6th ODI of the Coco-Cola Cup in 2000, only to return for the following match against Pakistan. The fixture against Pakistan proved to be the final match of his career. Cronje scored a mammoth 4998 runs in 162 matches at an average of 39.21. 2. Andy Flower – 172: Andy Flower. (© Getty Images) Andy Flower was the face of Zimbabwe cricket for the most part of his career. Flower was a mainstay in the side from his debut in 1993. He played 172 ODIs until the Zimbabwean management decided that he needed a break and rested him for the Coco-Cola ODI series at home. He went on to play 213 ODIs in his career before calling it quits and going on to have a successful coaching career. Flower scored 5267 runs in these 172 matches. 1. Sachin Tendulkar – 185: Sachin Tendulkar. (Photo by Qamar Sibtain/India Today Group/Getty Images) It is certainly no surprise to see Sachin Tendulkar atop the charts for most consecutive ODIs. Tendulkar featured in all matches from his debut until the famous 6-wicket win over Australia in Sharjah. That match marked Tendulkar’s 185th ODI. He was rested for the subsequent Coco-Cola Cup in 1998 in Bangladesh and was eventually recalled for the 5th ODI against the hosts. Sachin made 6620 runs in 185 matches at an average of 44.89.
