Players with most World T20 matches

The ICC World Twenty20 also referred to as the World T20, is the ultimate event in the shortest format of the cricket. The first ever tournament in 2007 was a huge success with top quality entertainment that included the world’s best players and packed out stadiums. The trend has continued ever since as the subsequent four editions have also been successful. The sixth edition will be no different being hosted by India. Here’s a list of 11 players with most World T20 appearances. 11. Stuart Broad- 26: Stuart Broad. (© Getty Images) England’s Stuart Broad is one of the best Test match fast bowlers in world cricket today but no longer features in the T20 team. He played 26 World T20 matches for his country and was a part of a winning team on 11 occasions. He took 30 wickets at an average of 22.36 with a best of 3/17. He has also led the country in this format. Whatever innocent impression might initially be given by his blond hair and baby-faced good looks, there have been few feistier cricketers in England’s Test history than Stuart Broad. Broad’s combative fast bowling and volatile temperament has been one of his great strengths as well as periodically bringing criticism about his behaviour. 10. The South African has a dazzling footwork and an amazing hand-eye coordination that allows him to score runs on either side of the wickets. He is unpredictable yet unbeatable. A nightmare for the bowlers and captains alike, his temperament and ability to pace the innings are secondary to none. AB’s 25 innings have produced 607 runs and 4 fifties. His average is 28.90 and he strikes at 138.26. He has been part of a winning team on 16 occasions. There are few who can charm fans, on and off the field, the manner in which this man does. 9. Angelo Matthews- 26: Angelo Mathews. (Photo Source: AFP) A solid batting technique, nagging consistency with the ball, and athleticism in the field, all set off by an unflappable temperament, have made Angelo Mathews one of Sri Lanka’s most dependable players. He became Sri Lanka’s youngest ever Test captain at 25, after having been groomed for the post for two years. He is a fine T20 player who bowls medium pace and can hit the long ball whenever required. His was a part of a winning team on 18 occasions. He has 18 wickets and scored 345 runs at an average of 31.36 including 1 fifty in the competition. He has been part of a winning team on 16 occasions. 8. Yuvraj Singh- 27: Yuvraj Singh. His hunger to do well and the hard yards he put in domestic cricket recently brought him back in the national side. Someone who is used to dramatic comebacks, the dashing left-hander loves making a grand statement whenever the stakes are at its optimum. His bowling, along with spectacular fielding, has always been an important aspect of his game and will give India more options to work with. He has scored 541 runs at an average of 25.76 and has taken 11 wickets. 7. MS Dhoni- 28: (Photo Source: Getty Images) Barring Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni has been arguably the most popular and definitely the most scrutinised cricketer from India. He has done so coming from the cricketing backwaters, the mining state of Jharkhand, and through a home-made batting and wicketkeeping technique, and a style of captaincy that is unorthodox. Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India has won the top prize in all formats: the No.1 Test ranking, the 50-over World Cup, the World Twenty20 and the ICC Champions Trophy. He has played 28 World T20 matches and won 17 of these. He has scored 440 runs at an average of 31.42 and has taken 17 catches along with 7 stumpings. 6. Shahid Afridi- 30: Shahid Afridi. (Photo Source: Getty Images) The Pakistan T20I captain is one of the game’s biggest hitters and a mercurial character. He was also a part of 18 wins for his team. His batting may lack the consistency, however, provides enough excitement to keep the fans interested. His fast leg-breaks have also proved highly effective in the shorter formats of the game. ‘Boom Boom’, as he is fondly called by his fans, remains a superstar and a magnetic crowd-puller in world cricket. His was a part of a winning team on 18 occasions. He has taken 12 catches along with 18 stumpings The purity of his drives and the strength of his cutting and pulling, particularly on slower subcontinent surfaces, have always been strong. There has been little doubt about Akmal’s batting but his glovework deteriorated alarmingly which resulted in him being axed from the national side. 4. Kumar Sangakkara- 31: Kumar Sangakkara. (Photo Source: ICC) Arguably the greatest batsman from the Island nation of Sri Lanka, Kumar Sangakkara’s cuts and pulls were a thrilling sight in cricket. An epitome of grace and elegance, the southpaw had a long and successful international career being a loyal servant of Sri Lankan cricket. Sanga played 30 innings in World T20 and scored 661 runs at an average of 25.42 and a strike rate of 112.22. He scored 4 fifties in the competition and was a part of the winning team in 2014 along with the other Sri Lankans in this list. He has taken 12 catches along with 14 stumpings in all World T20. 3. Lasith Malinga- 31: Lasith Malinga. (© Getty Images) One of the greatest unorthodox bowlers of his generation, Lasith Malinga is currently the skipper of the Sri Lankan T20I side. He is the leading wicket-taker in the World T20 with 38 wickets from 31 matches at an average of 20.07 and an economy rate of 7.43. Malinga bowls with a distinctive and explosive round-arm action which generates genuine pace and can disconcert batsmen who struggle to pick up the ball’s trajectory. He established himself as a regular in the playing XI after an impressive 50-over World Cup in 2007, with 18 wickets at 15.77 from eight matches as Sri Lanka made it to the final. He has been simply outstanding ever since. 2. Mahela Jayawardene- 31: Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka. When in flow, Mahela was elegance personified. He adjusted beautifully to the demands of T20 cricket and would often open the innings for his team and lay a strong foundation for others to build on. He played 31 innings and scored 1016 runs at an average of 39.07 including 1 ton and 6 fifties. His strike rate was an impressive 134.74 helped by 111 fours and 25 sixes. 1. Tillakaratne Dilshan- 31: Sri Lankan cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan. He played in the inaugural edition of the tourney in 2007 and will play in India in the next one as well. He has been part of 21 wins for his team. In fact, the top 4 in this list are Sri Lankan greats with an equal number of matches and wins, losses (9) and 1 tie each. He loves hitting flamboyant off-drives and cuts. Dilshan is the ultimate entertainer as he proved by introducing the Dilscoop during the World T20 in England. His 30 innings have produced 764 runs at an average of 29.38 and a strike rate of 124.22.
