37 Women cricketers receive MCC Honorary Life Membership
Among the players who have recently retired from the game, English dup of Isa Guha and Lydla Greenway have been named in the list
The MCC recently announced as many as 37 former women cricketers to be inducted in the Honorary Life Membership of the club. The Honorary Life Members of the MCC include the finest players, both men and women, who have played the game of cricket and have served the sport in various capacities. Among the women cricketers who have recently been inducted in the list, the players hail from England, Australia, India, New Zealand and Ireland.
No women cricketers from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, or Bangladesh have been named in the list this time around. As per the reports in Lords.org, all 37 women cricketers have accepted the membership. This is the first instance when so many players have been offered the membership at the same time.
The MCC President Matthew Fleming quoted the same. He also stressed on the fact that the club has been trying to promote women cricket immensely. They are very closely knit family. He also expressed his condolences over the sad demise of Rachael Heyhoe Flint, one of the first ever female honorary members of the club.
“Never before has MCC awarded so many Honorary Life Memberships at one time, and I am delighted that we are able to do so now in recognition of 37 exceptional cricketing careers. MCC’s relationship with women’s cricket has been brought sharply into focus with Lord’s hosting the ICC Women’s World Cup Final in the same year as the sad passing of one of the first female Honorary Life Members of the Club, Rachael Heyhoe Flint,” he quoted.
“Rachael made a colossal contribution to MCC and women’s cricket, and was instrumental in organising the first-ever cricket Women’s World Cup in 1973, which predates the men’s competition by two years,” he added further.
Isa Guha expresses her happiness
Among the players who have recently retired from the game, English dup of Isa Guha and Lydla Greenway have been named in the list. Isa Guha expressed her happiness over being inducted in the elite list.
She quoted, “It’s an incredible privilege to be awarded Honorary Life Membership of MCC. Of course, it would not be possible without the late Baroness Heyhoe Flint, who campaigned for women to become Members of this prestigious club. I would like to thank her and the many others who have welcomed women into MCC.”
