The IPL 2017 auction witnessed a lot of signings which left audiences and experts perplexed and bewildered at the sheer foolishness and unnecessary extravagance. Proven performers like Brad Hogg and Imran Tahir failed to earn a single bid while players relatively untested like Tymal Mills and Ben Stokes secured big money contracts. Sean Abbott must have been left bemused after remaining unsold having finished as the highest wicket-taker in the recently concluded season of the Big Bash League. Pat Cummins, on the other hand, earned a 4.5-million bid from the Delhi Daredevils mainly on the basis of his reputation. Stokes might have been impressive in the recent away series against India but such extravagant indulgence doesn’t assure rich dividends. Stokes might be forced to leave early on national duty which will restrict his participation in the tournament to the extent of the league matches. There is every chance of a poor performance from Stokes because of the immense pressure that accompanies such a huge auction take away – IPL history has is full of examples. 4. Sadly even that does not justify splurging out 12 crore rupees for the services of an English bowler who is largely untested on Indian pitches. Bangalore is a run scoring track where extreme pace earns you nothing but a clobbering. The decision to invest such a huge sum for his services might be something the Challengers go on to regret and they have so often spent a bit too much on a player only to be disappointed with the outcome. 3. The Knight Riders opted to invest in him even when proven performers like Ben Dunk, Alex Hales, and Mohammad Shahzad were available at the base price which does not seem like a wise decision. The exiled batsman has not been a part of the International circuit for quite some time now which might result in rusty gameplay. 2. His express pace without any proper variations leaked runs on a platter which urged the team management to take this decision. The Delhi Daredevils opted to spend 4.5 crore to pick him which flummoxed experts to no end. Cummins has not enjoyed a consistent run in the domestic season and was not even named in Australian’s squad for the tour of India as a result, though he has now replaced Mitchell Starc in the team. The Aussie is extremely injury-prone at the same time which might restrict his participation in the tournament. 1. The Daredevils would have been better served if they had opted to invest in the services of Ross Taylor, Marlon Samuels and Thisira Perera who enjoy the necessary experience and are more than capable of notching match-winning performances.
