Following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, a new board was appointed to assist and support the growth of cricket in Afghanistan. Rashid Khan resigned as captain shortly after the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE was announced.

Rashid was apparently dissatisfied with the World Cup team selections. He claimed that the Afghanistan Cricket Board and the selection committee did not obtain his approval for the team that was chosen for the mega event. Rashid also refused to disclose which of the team selections he was dissatisfied with.

He stated that as a captain and responsible citizen of the country, he reserved the right to have a say in team selections, which unfortunately did not occur. Rashid took to Twitter to express his displeasure with the team and resigned as captain. Mohammad Nabi took over as captain for the tournament in Oman and the UAE.
