5 Cricketers who are named after food items

Sometimes people just wonder – do some parents even think before setting a name for their baby? This question popped into many minds when Leicester City football club’s Danny Drinkwater came into limelight with a string of impressive performances and helped his side win the Premier League for the first time in 119 years. Well, more than his incredible ability to control the midfield, the biggest talking point was his name “Drinkwater”. He instantly became a meme content but the English midfielder never got demoralized as he was enjoying the best time in his professional career. In the gentleman’s game as well we have witnessed some names like these which caught us in a state of shock. A lot of people these days are getting named after edible things and maybe, it’s their obsession with food that is making them do so. Here’s a list of five International cricketers who were named after food items. 1. Clive Rice Clive Rice. (Photo Source: Allsport UK /Allsport) One of the first generation cricketers for South Africa after their struggle with Apartheid came to an end, Clive Rice was considered one of the biggest figures in their country’s meteoric growth. He led the Proteas side that visited India in 1991/92 for their first-ever ODI games in their history. Many youngsters of this generation do not understand the significance of his role in South Africa’s development as a cricketing nation, but he was often rated as their generation’s best all-rounder alongside Sir Richard Hadlee, Sir Ian Botham and Imran Khan. Rice passed away on 28 July 2015 in Cape Town after succumbing to the battle against brain tumour. 2. Graham Onions Graham Onions. He represented Lancashire in English County cricket before making his first International appearance against West Indies in May 2009. His career never got the lift he would’ve wanted and injuries didn’t help either. Keeping his International career aside, which included just 9 Tests and 4 ODIs, he picked up a staggering 678 wickets in first-class cricket to go with 104 wickets in List A. 3. Since he played International cricket during a time when media coverage wasn’t too huge, his name never got mocked. But not many could’ve dared to mock the legendary Englishman who was one of their first batsmen to have excelled in both ODIs and Tests. In a career that spanned over a decade, Lamb represented England in three different World Cups, having reached the final twice in 1987 and 1992. He was actually born in South Africa, but due to the Apartheid constraints, he ended up playing for England. The 66-year-old represented England in 79 Tests and 122 ODIs and notched over 8,000 runs in International cricket. 4. Kola Burger Kola Burger. (Photo Source: ESPNcricinfo) Now then, this ain’t an a combo-pack in some restaurant’s menu, Kola Bernie Burger was a South African cricketer who ended up playing for Namibia. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Bernie Burger moved to Namibia for better cricketing opportunities and represented the national team in quite a few qualifying tournaments. The fast bowler failed to earn a great name for himself with his game, but his name did put him under the spotlight. He played 30 official first-class games 37 List A games till date. The 37-year-old last represented Namibia in 2011. 5. Phil Mustard Phil Mustard. Phil Mustard made his debut for England back in 2007, but his career never took off. The Sunderland-born top order batsman represented Gloucestershire at the county level. Mustard represented the Barisal Burners in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in 2013. He has played 192 T20 games in his career and scored 4,229 runs thus far. The 36-year-old also played 210 first-class and 205 List A games for various teams including Durham, Lancashire and Mountaineers.
