The current Australian captain in the longest format of the game, Pat Cummins, had a topsy-turvy career. He debuted versus South Africa in 2011 and was considered a bright prodigy for Australia. Cummins took 1/38 and 6/79, becoming the second youngest Test cricketer to take six wickets in an innings. He then scored 13 runs in the second innings, including a four to win the match.

He was subsequently presented with the ‘Man of the Match’ award. However, he played the Test match with a heel injury and his career was marred by injuries. Between 2012- 2016, he underwent many injuries related to stress fracture and had to unfortunately stay out from Test cricket. After five years, Cummins returned to Test cricket in 2017.

He became the leading wicket taker in the Ashes 2017-2018 with 23 wickets. Cummins gained confidence in his physique, and he went on to become the No. 1 Test bowler. With 29 wickets, he went on to become the leading wicket-taker in the 2019 Ashes as well.

In Tests, his efforts earned him vice-captaincy. Cummins also took over as captain of the Australian Test team after Tim Paine stepped down, making him only the second bowler to lead Australia in Tests.
