The marriage of two persons of the same sex or gender, when entered into a civil or a religious ceremony is known as same-sex marriage. This practice was initially not accepted by society and there was a vast criticism about it. But as the world is progressing forward, people have become more open-minded and sensitive to other people’s feelings. This taboo is now being legally accepted in many countries all over the world. The LGBTQ communities are fighting hard for their rights and some of the cricketers have led by example in recent times. They didn’t hold themselves back from letting the world know about their sexuality. These cricketers married the partner of their choice, even though the same gender, and protested against all the odds and reservations. Here are five cricketers who were involved in same-sex marriage: 1. Alex Blackwell and Lynsey Askew Alex Blackwell and Lynsey Askew. (Photo Source: Twitter) Alexandra Joy Blackwell is a former Australian woman’s cricketer. Born in New South Wales, Blackwell represented Australia in 251 international games. The vastly experienced campaigner decided to call it quits in February 2017 bringing an end to a 15-year-long career. Alex also captained her country for a brief while. She came out as a lesbian in 2013 and was only the second cricketer after England’s Steven Davies to come out during the playing days. In 2015, she married her girlfriend of eight years Lynsey Askew in England legally. At that point in time, her country didn’t accept same-sex marriage. Their conjugality was recognised in Australia only in 2017. Blackwell believes that sexuality is totally irrelevant and cannot determine how well a person can perform a role. In 2017, Cricket Australia also pledged support for the same-sex marriage along with 15 other sporting bodies in the country. 2. Amy Satterthwaite and Lea Tahuhu Amy Satterthwaite and Lea Tahuhu. The White Ferns cricketers, however, were in the focus when they tied the knot in 2017. Two of the most important members in the New Zealand women team, Amy and Lea are a proud couple. While Amy is a vastly experienced all-rounder, Tahuhu bowls at a great pace and sends shivers down the spines of the opposition batsmen. They didn’t back off from making their homosexual relation public and openly talk about their journey in the same-sex wedding. This duo is also quite active on social media and has even been offering help to people who have buried themselves in a shell due to this age-old taboo. 3. Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp. (Photo Source: Instagram) South Africa women’s team captain tied the knot with her Proteas teammate Marizanne Kapp in 2018. The couple, after dating each other for several years, married each other in a private ceremony. Kapp made the news of their nuptials public through a social media post. Both these women are all-rounders and share a great partnership on the field as well. They are amongst the leading wicket-takers for their team and have even scored tons of runs. Moreover, this pair was the first two girls to join a boy’s cricket academy in South Africa. 4. Megan Schutt and Jess Holyoake Megan Schutt and Jess Holyoake. This South Australian has been around at the international arena since 2012 and is a fast bowler. Megan is highly talented and one of the impactful players in the current Aussie set-up. Megan’s girlfriend Jess Holyoake comes from a non-cricketing background. After having spent about two years with each other, Megan decided to propose Jess in 2017 after same-sex marriage was made legal in the country. Holyoake took just about five seconds to accept the proposal and the couple has been together ever since happy. 5. Jess Jonassen and Sarah Wearn Jess Jonassen and Sarah Wearn. (Photo Source: Twitter) Jess Jonassen is another Australian woman cricketer who is a bowling all-rounder. She bowls left-arm orthodox spin and is almost a regular feature in the limited-overs sides. She has got over 130 international wickets and is a highly economical customer. Jess’s girlfriend Sarah Wearn does not belong to the cricket community. Jonassen proposed Wearn in February 2018 and both of them are quite active on social media. They share great respect and mutual admiration for each other.
