Arguably England’s best current batsman, Joe Root had started a new phase at No.3 in his career, and hadn’t been altogether successful. 1-0 down in the series, England desperately needed him to deliver.

In the recently concluded 2nd Test against Pakistan, Root amassed his career best score – 254 off 406, at a healthy strike rate of 62. He ensured an innings victory with multitude of boundaries – 27, against a world class bowling line-up on a wicket that wasn’t obviously helpful.

Not only did he lead his side’s fightback to level the series 1-1, he oozed with confidence and continued from where he left off in the next Test. The world class batsman is bound to be found more often on such lists.
