Bowlers are expected to contribute with the bat in Test cricket but none expect them to be the top scorers. But this did happen in the first Test match of the 2013 Ashes played at Trent Bridge, Nottingham in England.

Having won the toss, England elected to bat first with the vision of posting a huge 1st innings total. But it was not to be as Australia bowled them out cheaply, for a mere 215. In return, Australia too fumbled as they slipped to 117-9. England was completely on top and it seemed that they will have a substantial 1st innings lead.

It was the debutant Ashton Agar, who came in at number 11 played a marvellous innings under pressure. Agar stayed at the crease for a long time building a big partnership with Phil Hughes. He missed out on a well-deserved debut century by 2 runs as he was caught off Stuart Broad on 98. Nonetheless, it was a match-saving inning and he was the highest scorer of the innings, which no one expected in the wildest of dreams.
