5 most embarrassing IPL records

With the quality of players in the Indian Premier League, new records are being set on a regular basis. Every player and team aspire to set new records and cement their place in the history of the league and records like Gayle’s 175 and Alzarri Joseph’s 6/12 are probably going to stay forever.

However, every player and even a team can have an off day on occasion, and if things don’t go their way, that ‘off day’ could turn into a nightmare given how unforgiving this sport can be. Such days are when one team sets unbelievably good records while the other goes into the history books for the wrong reasons.

There have been several embarrassing moments in the history of the league that teams and players would prefer not to remember about. Here’s a look at-

1. Basil Thampi’s 0/70 against RCB in 2018

Basil Thampi had a day to forget when his team, Sunrisers played against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on the 17^th of May in 2018. After having won the toss SRH did the obvious thing and chose to field first at the Chinnaswamy.

He conceded 70 runs in that innings and set the unwanted record for conceding most runs in a game. There were indications that he could have a bad day at the office during his first couple of deliveries itself as he was hit for two sixes by Moeen Ali. He ended up conceding 19 runs in that over.

In his 2^nd over, he gave away 18 runs and in his next one, he leaked 14 runs. At the time, the unwanted record stood at 66 runs given by Ishant Sharma and in the end, the record was broken in his 22^nd delivery. It was quite a poor performance from him that ultimately cost SRH the game as they lost by 14 runs. He is still with the Hyderabad franchise but hasn’t been given many chances over the last couple of seasons.

2. Gautam Gambhir and Ashton Turner’s 3 consecutive ducks in a season

Being dismissed without scoring a single run is one of the worst things a batsman can experience and not being able to get off the mark on three continuous occasions is as bad as it can get.

Gautam Gambhir was the first one to experience it in 2014 when he failed to open his account in each of the first three games. He faced 13 balls across those three games without any returns and even in the fourth game, he could only manage one run from five balls.

Ashton Turner went through the same in 2019 when he was dismissed for three ducks in his first IPL innings. He was dismissed on the first ball itself, and he even broke the record for most consecutive ducks in T20 history as he got out for zero in his previous two T20 innings as well.

3. RCB’s 49 all out

Losing all 10 wickets in an innings most often means that the team performed poorly with the bat. RCB won the toss on the 23^rd of April in 2017 and decided to field first at home to KKR. Things didn’t start particularly well for RCB due to Sunil Narine’s aggressive start, but they soon collapsed and were bundled out for a paltry 131 in 19.4 overs.

Given RCB’s batting lineup, one would have expected them to chase down the total with minimum effort, but KKR’s bowlers had other ideas as they dismissed Virat Kohli in the first over itself. They also lost Mandeep Singh in the next over and AB de Villiers next. After that, it became clear that they would have to fight hard to win the game.

However, they kept losing wickets and ultimately got bundled out for just 49 runs in 9.4 overs. They lost their last six wickets for just nine runs. None of their batsmen could even get into double digits, and Kedar Jadhav was their top scorer having scored 9 runs. All in all, this is probably the most embarrassing batting performance by a team in IPL history.

4. Deccan Chargers conceding 28 extras in one innings

Teams are always looking to limit the number of extras they concede as they are more often than not just unnecessary runs that bowlers can avoid giving away. Thus, conceding 28 extras in just one innings is a very poor stat and it was one that cost Deccan Chargers the game in the group stage against KKR in 2008.

Having opted to bat first, they did quite poorly and struggled to find any sort of rhythm, and were bowled out for just 110 runs. However, by picking up early wickets they brought themselves back into the game and reduced KKR to 21/3 at one stage.

Their run rate was always below 6 and with the fall of wickets, the chase wasn’t going to be an easy one by any means. However, the fact that DC gave away 28 extras including 15 wides meant that KKR were able to get to the target eventually. They were 112/5 at the end of 19 overs when they won the match, but without the extras, it would have been a different story altogether.

 5. MI’s 146 run win against Delhi Daredevils

The 45^th match of IPL 2017 witnessed one of the most embarrassing defeats of all time as the eventual champions completely decimated the team that eventually finished 6^th. DD won the toss and elected to field first.

The Mumbai-based team started off quite well as their openers combined for a brilliant partnership of 79 runs within 9 overs. Power hitting from Lendl Simmons and Kieron Pollard put them in a commanding position and both of them managed to score more than 60. In the end, they reached a strong total of 212.

DD had a very poor start as they lost Sanju Samson for a golden duck in the first over itself and Mumbai’s bowlers kept picking up wickets at regular intervals. Only three batsmen could get into double digits and as a result, they were bundled out for a meagre 66 runs. It was the third-lowest score in IPL history and given that they had conceded such a high score, they suffered the biggest defeat of all time in IPL.
