“One thing about him is that very seldom he changes his game and if it’s up there he will go for it” are the words uttered by Tony Greig while seeing Saeed Anwar in action. For the simple reason that Anwar didn’t need to change his game according to conditions and match situations as his natural strokeplay always did the trick. Add to that his left-hander’s elegance which made him a superstar in the late 2000’s.

Especially his cover drives and leg glances were more like brushstrokes on a canvas. Also, his pick-up and sweep shots against spinners looked like artistic work in its purest form. More importantly, he also became the country’s batting mainstay for a brief period and gathered close to 14000 international runs across formats.

In his 13-year career, Anwar made a name for himself as one of the best top-order batsmen the game has seen. He also achieved some recording-breaking feats including that of the highest ODI score of 194 at the time. Having said that, his legacy doesn’t lie in the tons of runs he has scored for Pakistan but it’s his touch play which makes him an eternal name in the cricketing annals.
