5 players who flopped after getting more than 10 crore bid in the auction
In the previous 12 IPL auctions, there have been several unknown players who have received massive bids.
The 2020 IPL Auction is just two weeks away as the entire cricketing fraternity awaits the mega-event. The fate of 971 players will be decided in Kolkata on 19 December. In the previous 12 IPL auctions, there have been several unknown players who have received massive bids.
The likes of KC Cariappa, Varun Chakravarthy and T. Natarajan are the best examples of it. While a majority of the expensive players have starred in the cash-rich league, there have been a few flops as well. Usually, the fans consider 10 Crores mark as the benchmark in IPL Auction. However, with a hefty price tag, there also comes the uninvited pressure on a player to justify his value in the cash-rich league.
In this article, we will have a look at the 5 stars who flopped after getting a 10+ Crore bid in the auction.
Ben Stokes – Rajasthan Royals
Ben Stokes is one of the only three players in IPL Auction history to have received a 10+ Crore bid twice. Rising Pune Supergiant splurged 14.5 Crores for him in the IPL Auction 2017 but after Pune’s exit from the IPL next year, Stokes found himself in the auction room once again in 2018.
Rajasthan Royals snapped him up next by submitting a bid of 12.5 Crores. The English all-rounder had been a match-winner for the Pune-based franchise but he could not continue his form in IPL 2018 and IPL 2019. He has played 22 IPL matches for the inaugural IPL champs.
In those 22 matches, he has aggregated 319 runs. However, his strike rate has been below 125. With the ball, he has scalped only 14 wickets. His economy rate was 11.22 in IPL 2019 thus, Stokes has been a major flop for the Jaipur-based franchise. Stokes would be hoping to replicate his World Cup 2019 and Ashes 2019 form in the upcoming IPL 2020.
