The first task of every franchise before the Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons is the auction. A number of players from big names to unknown quantity list themselves and teams jot down the players they want in their side. Among them, a few exists every season, who are targeted by most of the franchises. Their bidding goes on for quite some time, adding to all the fun and excitement. Meanwhile, their price keeps soaring as most teams don’t want to let the big players go to other teams. These cricketers mostly turn out to top the auction charts. From Indian to foreigners, a number of them have hogged the limelight in the auction. Ever since the inception of the IPL way back in 2008, the auction has become an important aspect and has turned out to be make or break. Hence, it didn’t spring a surprise that he turned out to be the most expensive player of the 2008 IPL. Each of the eight sides tried to bag his services, but it was the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who roped him in at a whopping amount of USD 1.5 million. There was no looking back for the Jharkhand-born ever since. At the fag end of his career, Dhoni is already one of the most successful skippers in the T20 league, having won three titles. The keeper has scored 4,432 runs in 190 encounters at an average of 42.20 and many a times finished games for his team from tricky circumstances. His value can be comprehended from the fact that he went for a whopping price of INR 16 crore. Delhi Daredevils, now Capitals, brought him in. But the franchise didn’t quite find it easy to bag him as three more teams tried their heart out. Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bid for him, but the Daredevils came out trumps. Unfortunately, Yuvraj flattered to deceive. In 14 matches, the Chandigarh-born could only manage 238 runs at a dismal average of 19.07. His strike-rate of 118.09 was on the lower side as well. The Orange Army brought him for INR 4 crores in the auction in February and he didn’t let his team down. In March, the Nangarhar-born churned out a spell of 2-1-3-5 versus Ireland in Great Noida. However, after an impressive season, Rashid wasn’t retained and was put up in the auction. It was expected that a lot of teams would bid for him. KXIP and the Royals were involved in a bidding war after which Delhi joined in. After his price exceeded 7 crores, the RCB jumped in. In the end, he was sold to the Punjab franchise for INR 9 crore. Then it was the turn of SRH to use the Right to Match card on him. In that season, Rashid ended as the second-highest wicket-taker with 21 scalps. Shimron Hetmyer- 2019 Shimron Hetmyer. (Photo: IANS) 2018 was a fruitful year for Shimron Hetmyer. He scored a couple of ODI centuries versus the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bangladesh. But it was his century against India in Guwahati that helped him gain some attention. In the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), he was the third-highest run-scorer, representing the Guyana Amazon Warriors. There Hetmyer got 440 runs at an average of 40. The numbers only enhanced his reputation. The IPL 2019 auction took place in December 2018 and Hetmyer was a hot property. His base price was INR 50 lakhs, but it went up to INR 4.2 crore where Virat Kohli’s RCB bagged him. In fact, the team bid only once and before that, KXIP, DC, RR and SRH went hammer and tongs. His exploits in all the three formats have been unmatchable and his ability to stay calm in pressure situations has helped him to perform. In 2017, he became the most expensive player in the IPL. He was brought by the Rising Pune Supergiant and the franchise shelled out INR 14.5 crores. Four other teams put their bid for him that season, namely Mumbai Indians (MI), RCB, the Daredevils and the Sunrisers. Stokes didn’t succumb under the price-tag pressure. Stokes racked up 316 runs in 12 matches at an average of 31.60 with a 63-ball 103 against the Gujarat Lions. With the ball, he picked 12 wickets. In 2018, Stokes went to the Royals for a significant amount of 12.5 crores.
