5 potential captains Sunrisers Hyderabad should target in IPL 2022 Mega Auction

Call them the least entertaining team, call them the best bowling team or call them the most consistent team Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) sure know a thing or two to go about their business in the usual calm and calculative manner. They don’t boast of superstar players like some of the other celebrated teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as Mumbai Indians or Royal Challengers Bangalore. Yet they get their job done and without breaking a sweat. Also, they were the only one of the teams to have consistently made it to the playoffs of the IPL since 2016. But things look bleak this year as they have won just one match in their eight completed games in the 14th edition of the IPL. Although they are not officially out of the race yet, the turnaround this year looks a bit challenging. They also left everyone surprised when David Warner was removed from the captaincy. Although they announced Kane Williamson as the captain and have put trust in his leadership abilities for a long team, the franchise would be keeping an eye on few possible players with regards to captaincy during the next year’s IPL mega-auctions. Here are few players SRH can target for captaincy during the mega-auctions in 2022: 1. Steve Smith Steve Smith. He also has previously captained IPL teams like Rising Pune Supergiant and Rajasthan Royals and knows a thing or two about captaining in a high-profile league like IPL. Smith currently plays for Delhi Capitals. But with only three players allowed to be retained by the franchise, Smith might not be playing for the Capitals next year. SRH, who are looking out for a solid player as well as a backup leader can look to get the former Australian skipper in their team. During this season of the IPL, SRH middle-order batters have failed to deliver on a consistent basis, which has put undue pressure on Kane Williamson, Jonny Bairstow and Warner. So, having Smith in the team might be useful for SRH in tackling their middle-order woes. Also, Smith can double-up as a leader and can take some pressure away from Williamson. 2. Yadav’s fearless approach, coupled with an indefatigable appetite for scoring runs makes him a hot property in the IPL. By the looks of it, Mumbai Indians would most likely retain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Keiron Pollard in the 2022 IPL auctions. SKY, as he is fondly called, might fetch some jaw-dropping amount in the IPL if MI doesn’t retain or use the Right to Match (RTM) card. Not only could SRH look to get him but also they might also name him the leader. Suryakumar Yadav knows quite a few Indian as well as foreign players, and that might work to his advantage while leading an IPL team. Also, Yadav has consistently scored 400 runs for three seasons for MI and that is a big boost to have. He also has leadership experience as he was the captain for Mumbai in the Ranji circuit. 3. Quinton de Kock may have been taken off captaincy responsibilities by the South African management, but that doesn’t rule the possibility of him leading teams in franchise cricket across the world. An instinctive and fearless leader, the MI wicketkeeper-batter can thrive as the leader of the team if he gets an opportunity. In all probability, SRH will retain Kane Williamson, Bhuvenshwar Kumar and Rashid Khan for the mega auctions in 2022, which means there is a possibility of a spot for a wicketkeeper-batter opening in the team. So far in IPL career, De Kock has played 73 IPL matches and has scored 2131 runs. So there is a plethora of experience and a possible candidate for SRH in terms of a utility wicketkeeper-batter and a potential captain, who the franchise can look to invest in. 4. Hanuma Vihari Hanuma Vihari. (Photo Source: Instagram) Franchises always crave naming a local player as their captain, and what better and bigger player than getting Hanuma Vihari in the SRH team. The world is still yet to Vihari’s full potential as the batter as he has got limited opportunities in the IPL. Currently, he plays for DC but, before that he played for SRH also in 2013 to 2015. But with a more sound technique and a good exposure in various foreign conditions, SRH again can look to acquire his services for the mega auctions in 2022. So far, the right-hand batter has played only 24 IPL games and scored 284 runs. With SRH’s middle-order batters like Manish Pandey, Kedhar Jadhav, and Vijay Shankar failing to score runs for the past two seasons or so, Vihari can be a perfect fit. 5. Jos Buttler Jos Buttler. But with Eoin Morgan, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes doing leadership duties for England, Buttler has not quite the opportunity to display his captaincy credentials. Things could change during the mega-auctions in 2022. Rajasthan Royals have made it clear that Sanju Samson will be their leader for at least two years. Also, Samson is the wicketkeeper for the Royals. By the looks of it, it seem he would not be retained and will most likely will play for a different franchise. SRH might be interested in the RR wicketkeeper-batter as he will don the gloves and can also possibly form a lethal pair with David Warner at the top.
