It was the cunningness of Indian captain MS Dhoni who promoted himself ahead of Yuvraj Singh in the final of 2011 World Cup to absorb the pressure and take India to win. He is one the smartest people on the field of cricket and has proven that time to time. He also inspires his players to do their absolute best as evident from his stump mic conversations with his players. And his players will always give him his best and back his instincts.

Dhoni knows which player can do what and he takes full advantage of that. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of his squad and uses them to manipulate the opposition to the full. His use of Suresh Raina against Ireland when he saw that Irish batsmen were struggling against Ashwin was a masterstroke with Raina picking the wicket of Ed Joyce.

Such moves from Dhoni shows that he doesn’t play mind games with opponents; he plays chess with them and is always 5 moves ahead of his opponents. He is not afraid to experiment or innovate, but is able to bring out the best out of a crappy situation even when he is not able to innovate due to circumstances. Not to mention that he is incredibly lucky and now that he has retired from Test cricket, he is fresher and fit with new ideas.

His leadership abilities combined with all the reasons mentioned above are what will make India defend their World Cup title successfully this time.
