5 sons of famous cricketers who weren’t successful
Sometimes cricketers who hail from a rich cricketing history fail under the weight of expectations.
3. Sir Viv Richards – Mali Richards
The batsman who treated the bowlers like puppets in his heydays was the charismatic Vivian Richards. He was the central figure when the nation won two consecutive championships. The swashbuckling right-hander was a top-order batsman who played spin and pace equally well. More than his international records Richards was loved for his swagger on the field. Still, his counterparts and cricketing pundits consider him as the best batsman to have played the game.
The Caribbean legend retired in 1991 but the cricketing fraternity was hoping his son Mali Richards to take on the mantle. Unlike his father, Mali was a left-handed batsman who played in the middle-order. He announced his arrival in style when he stroked 319 for Antigua in a U-19 game.
Soon he started plying his trade for domestic side Leeward islands and also made county appearances for Middlesex. Mali Richards never made the cut to the West Indies team and it is quite surprising for a player whose father’s name is etched in the history books.
