5 sons of famous cricketers who weren’t successful
Sometimes cricketers who hail from a rich cricketing history fail under the weight of expectations.
5. Hamish Rutherford – Ken Rutherford
The New Zealand team’s greatest achievement in the 20th century was their semi-final advent in the 1992 World Cup. One of the members of that historic team was the former Black Caps skipper, Ken Rutherford. The right-hander was a regular in the team and always played a pivotal role in the middle-order. Ken even led the nation when their superstars Richard Hadlee and Martin Crowe retired from the international arena. Under him, the New Zealand team won 10 ODIs and he himself became a better batsman which benefitted the Kiwis.
After piling almost 6000 runs in the internationals Ken Rutherford retired but his son, Hamish Rutherford emulated him after two decades. He made his debut at the age of 24 and stroked an eye-catching 171 against a well renowned England bowling attack including Stuart Board and James Anderson.
Unfortunately, he failed to cross the same mark in the next 30 innings which prompted the selectors to drop him. The left-hander is still grinding out in the domestic circuit for Otago but has not received a national call up since 2015.
