5 Times cricket fans crossed their limits

Cricket is more than a sport on the field; it’s an emotion, not only for the players, but also for the fans around the field. Even as the players ooze passion in the middle, the supporters don’t stay far behind. Whenever their favourite son smashes boundaries or picks up wickets, the people erupt in jubilation. It’s an essential part of the game as it keeps the fans and the cricketers connected. Even as the positive aspect of fan love is worth cherishing, there’s a dark side etched to it. There are people, who find it tough to see their team lose on a consistent basis. Fans have also lost their lives while showing their support. Some of them also vent their anger out in unruly manners. Their actions not only showed lack of spirit, but also ended up marring the sanctity of the game to some extent. In the article, let’s take a look at five incidents in cricket when the fans went overboard with their anger: – 1. 1996 World Cup semi-final in Kolkata Vinod Kambli. (Photo Source: Twitter) Chasing 251 to win the 1996 World Cup semi-final at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India were cruising along at 98 for one. Sachin Tendulkar and Sanjay Manjrekar had put on 90 for the second wicket and the Sri Lankan heads were starting to drop. However, veteran Sanath Jayasuriya removed the Master Blaster on 65 after which the Men in Blue started losing wickets at an alarming rate. In no time, the hosts were reduced to 120 for eight and the Lankans managed to stage a comeback from nowhere. India’s sudden batting collapse didn’t go down well with the crowd at the iconic venue. Expressing their anger and grief, the people threw cans, bottles and whatever they could lay their hands on. In the end, the match was awarded to Lanka, who went on to win the World Cup. 2. Bangladesh fans hack Virat Kohli’s account after 2018 Asia Cup Bangladesh fans. (Photo Source: Twitter) Bangladesh agonisingly lost the final of the 2018 Asia Cup to India by three wickets after the match went right down to the last ball. The Tigers could only manage 222 after a 120-run opening stand between Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Liton went on to score his maiden ODI century off only 87 deliveries. But his dismissal on 121 off chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav was a controversial one. The third umpire reckoned that Liton’s right foot was on the line when MS Dhoni took the bails off in a flash. After he got out, Bangladesh scored 34 runs in the last 45 balls. Following the defeat, the Bangladesh fans went all out in protest. They hacked the website of Virat Kohli, who wasn’t even a part of the Asia Cup. The fans also asked the ICC to make an apology and threatened to hack more accounts. 3. (Photo Source: Instagram) Back in 2018, when the Cauvery incident was hogging the headlines in Chennai, the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium was a witness to a shameful incident. It panned out in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) first match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). A couple of miscreants hurled shoes at Faf du Plessis and Ravindra Jadeja. The unidentified persons were then detained by the police. Later, reacting on the matter, Jadeja said that despite the unruly behaviour, CSK got loads of support from the fans. The Super Kings won the match in the last over. Nevertheless, the protests surrounding the Cauvery saga increased. In the end, CSK’s home matches were shifted to Pune’s MCA Stadium. To Chennai’s luck, they played all their home games in 2019 at the Chepauk. 4. Fan abuses David Warner during Ashes 2019 David Warner. (Photo Source: Twitter) Though David Warner made his ODI return in the 2019 World Cup, his Test comeback took place in the Ashes in England. Since he was coming back after the ball-tampering scandal in 2018, he was expected to be greeted with rough behaviour from the English crowd. And it wasn’t any different. Right from the opening Test, he along with former skipper Steve Smith, was booed by the audience. In the fourth Test at the Old Trafford in Manchester, Warner decided to hit back at a supporter, who tried to demean him. At a time when he was coming down the stairs, a fan called him ‘f***ing cheat’. Warner then turned back and gave him a thumbs up, shutting down the troll with grace. Warner didn’t have the best of series though as barring a fifty, he strained to cross the single-digit score. 5. Mustafizur cutter incident in 2015 (Photo Source: Twitter) Back in 2015, the same year when Bangladesh made their maiden World Cup quarter-finals, the Tigers sparked a bit of a controversy. It was after their 2-1 victory over India at home. It was Mustafizur Rahman’s maiden series and he wreaked havoc. In three matches, the Satkhira-born picked up 13 wickets. His off-cutters were tough to read and the Indian batters fell prey to it. The left-armer picked a fifer before he followed it up with a six-wicket haul. Even in the third ODI, he got two scalps. After the series victory, a picture did the rounds where the half-shaven heads of Indian cricketers were given. In the pic, the young Mustafizur was seen, holding a cutter. Below that, the Indian players held the banner with a tagline which translates to: ‘We are using it, you should too’.
