5 Times IPL franchises were involved in the controversy

The Indian Premier League (IPL), ever since its inception, has proved to be beneficial not only for the BCCI but also for the domestic players. It has provided an excellent platform for the cricketers across the world to stake their claim for a place in the national side. Rather many have made their international debut after shining in the cash-rich T20 league.

But every coin has two sides. With fame, IPL also invited controversies. The 2013 spot-fixing scandal was a huge shock to the cricket fans. It led to the two franchises Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) being suspended for two years. However, there have been instances when the IPL franchises have also been involved in controversies and here we bring you five such instances.

1. Gurunath Meiyappan’s involvement in betting in IPL 2013

The 2013 edition of the IPL is remembered more for the infamous spot-fixing scandal. Three Rajasthan Royals players S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were arrested during the tournament for their involvement in the spot-fixing. Moreover, during the investigation, CSK team owner’s N Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan’s name came forward.

He was accused of betting and passing on the team information to the bookies. Gurunath was usually seen with the team and used to sit in the dugout as well. In February 2014, he was also found guilty of the same even as the CSK denied his any role with the franchise.

However, as he was always spotted with the team, it deemed as the franchise’s mistake and CSK was eventually suspended. Likewise, the Royals franchise was also suspended as their co-owners, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra were reportedly accused of betting. Both the franchises missed the 2016 and 2017 seasons of the IPL.
