5 Youngest captains in IPL history
Some of these cricketers have become permanent skippers of their IPL teams after donning the captaincy hat way early in their IPL career.
The Indian Premier League – IPL has been a stepping stone of the country’s cricket. Right from its inaugural edition, it has been consistently serving its purpose of entertaining the cricketing fraternity. Moreover, it has also stayed true to its model as it has carved out some cricketing gems in its journey. Not only it has improved the skillset of players but it has also developed the leadership qualities of these cricketers.
Among them, certain players got the opportunity to lead their respective IPL teams in the early years of their professional careers. It is mostly due to an injury to their regular skipper or a change of plans of the franchise midway through a disastrous campaign. Whatever may be the reason these cricketers have joined an elite panel by becoming the youngest leaders of the league history.
Here is the list of 5 youngest captains of IPL history
1) Virat Kohli, 22 years 187 days
At the start of this decade if anybody would have said that an Indian cricketer will successfully fill in Sachin Tendulkar’s boots he would be considered a laughing stock. However, things have panned out quite differently as Virat Kohli has done the impossible with his batting supremacy. Not only he is breaking Sachin’s records but he is doing it like a child’s play. He has already gathered more than 20000 international runs.
Apart from his batting credentials, his leadership qualities have also taken the country’s cricket to the next level. Right from his teenage days where he led the U19 team to the glory, many cricketing pundits have termed him a captaincy material. That’s why even the Royal Challengers Bangalore handed him the charges as early as in 2011.
When Daniel Vettori injured himself midway through the 2011 edition, Kohli led the side for 3 games. The team won 2 games under him. In the process, he also became the youngest captain in IPL history. Though he didn’t excel as a batsman in his first stay as the skipper of the team there were early signs that he will be the future of the RCB franchise.
