South Africa faced Sri Lanka in the 5th ODI of the 5-match series, leading the series by 3-1. Africa was put into bat at the placid Wanderers stadium and they responded by making 312/4. Captain Graeme Smith and keeper AB de Villiers both scored 125 and 125* respectively.

Sri Lanka had to chase 312 to win the match and salvage some pride. Openers Tharanga and captain Dilshan gave Sri Lanka a start with 76 runs in 9 overs. Then the big partnership between Kumar Sangakkara who made 102 and Lahiru Thirimanne who made 69 took Sri Lanka to victory, who won by 2 wickets in hand and with only one ball to go.
