6 Instances where wicketkeepers from both teams scored 100s in an ODI

Wicketkeepers have a very large role to play in any form of cricket. But their utility in one-day cricket becomes much more importance since they play a role of virtual all-rounders in the team. Primarily, teams used to pick wicketkeepers for their keeping abilities, but Adam Gilchrist changed all that with his slam-bang batting. So the teams started looking for keepers with batting prowess and since then, every team has a keeper that bats as good as a proper batsman. Impressively, many keepers have had brilliant careers with lots of runs and match winning knocks under their belts and we bring to you 6 instances where keepers from both teams got a chance to shine, by scoring a century for their teams. 6. AB de Villiers 107 & Tatenda Taibu 107* Zimbabwe v South Africa, Harare, 2007: Tatenda Taibu. (© Getty Images) The match was played at the Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe in 2007. South Africa was up 2-0 in the 3-match series and this was the match where Zimbabwe was playing for pride. South Africa batted first and thanks to a good opening partnership and a 97 from Albie Morkel, South Africa reached 323/9. Their biggest contributor, however, was their wicketkeeper AB de Villiers who made 107 from 89 balls. Zimbabwe began their chase in impressive fashion with openers Sibanda and Masakadza making 76 in 13 overs. Their whole innings revolved around the 107* by keeper Tatenda Taibu, who was supported by Brendan Taylor, who made 42. But at the end, Zimbabwe fell short by 28 runs and lost the series 3-0. AB de Villiers was named both the Man of the match and Man of the series. 5. AB de Villiers 125* & Kumar Sangakkara 102 South Africa v Sri Lanka, Johannesburg, 2011-12: AB de Villiers. (Photo Source: AFP) South Africa faced Sri Lanka in the 5th ODI of the 5-match series, leading the series by 3-1. Africa was put into bat at the placid Wanderers stadium and they responded by making 312/4. Captain Graeme Smith and keeper AB de Villiers both scored 125 and 125* respectively. Sri Lanka had to chase 312 to win the match and salvage some pride. Openers Tharanga and captain Dilshan gave Sri Lanka a start with 76 runs in 9 overs. Then the big partnership between Kumar Sangakkara who made 102 and Lahiru Thirimanne who made 69 took Sri Lanka to victory, who won by 2 wickets in hand and with only one ball to go. 4. Kumar Sangakkara 112 & Jos Buttler 121 England v Sri Lanka, Lord’s, 2014: Kumar Sangakkara. (© Getty Images) 4th ODI between Sri Lanka and England at Lord’s was a must win for Sri Lanka who were 2-1 down in the 5 match series. England put Sri Lanka into bat. Tillakaratne Dilshan (71) and Kumar Sangakkara (112) put on a 172 run partnership. Captain Mathews (30) and useful contributions from Thirimanne and Senanayake took Sri Lanka to 300/9 at the end of their 50 overs. England could not recover from their slow start and despite a couple of 40s from Gary Ballance and Joe Root; England looked like losing the match at 111/5 in 28th over. But then a brilliant counter attack from Ravi Bopara (51 from 47 balls) and a devastatingly explosive innings from English keeper Jos Buttler, who made 121 from 74 balls with 11 fours and 4 sixes. But some good bowling from Malinga who took 3 wickets at the death restricted England to 293/8 and won the match by 7 runs and kept the series alive at 2-2. 3. Jos Buttler 105 & Quinton de Kock 138* South Africa v England, Bloemfontein, 2015-16: England batsman Jos Buttler.(Photo by GIANLUIGI GUERCIA/AFP/Getty Images) A recent occurrence of keepers from both teams making centuries in the same match was between England and South Africa at Bloemfontein. England had a good start from Alex Hales (57) and Joe Root (52). But the real impetus to the England innings came from keeper Jos Buttler’s 105 from 76 balls, which had 5 sixes and 11 fours. England finished up with 399/9 at the end of their 50 overs. South Africa had the task of chasing 400 once again and they got a good start with Faf du Plessis (55) and keeper Quinton de Kock making 138* from 96 balls. Rain interrupted the match when South Africa was 250/5 in the 34th over. The match couldn’t be started back and England won the match by 39 runs (D/L method). 2. Warren Barresi 137* & Irfan Karim 108 Kenya v Netherlands, Lincoln, 2013-14: Irfan Karim of Kenya. Netherlands batted first and thanks to Eric Szwarczynski (57) and keeper Warren Barresi (138*) made sure that Netherlands got to a challenging total of 265/6 in their allotted 50 overs. Kenya took on the challenge head first with their keeper Irfan Karim making 108 from 84 balls. Ragheb Aga scored (86) and Collins Obuya (37) made sure that Kenya got over the finishing line in the 36th over. Irfan Karim got the Man of the match for his match-winning century. 1. Kumar Sangakkara 138* and MS Dhoni 183* India v Sri Lanka, Jaipur, 2005-06: Kumar Sangakkara. (Photo Source: AFP) India and Sri Lanka met at Jaipur for the 3rd match of the 7 match series in 2005-06. Sri Lanka was 2-0 down and batted first in this match. Kumar Sangakkara who opened the innings made a brilliant 138* and with help from Mahela Jayawardene (71) and Maharoof (33* from 16 balls) took Sri Lanka to a formidable 298/4 in their 50 overs. Ajit Agarkar was the most successful bowler for India, picking 2/62 in his 10 overs. India lost Sachin Tendulkar early in the chase and Captain Rahul Dravid made a shocking decision to promote wicketkeeper MS Dhoni to number 3 slot in order to get the innings going. This move of promoting Dhoni introduced us to the Dhoni that we came to know in the years to come after that. MS Dhoni made a cavalier 183* from just 145 balls, an innings that contained 15 fours and a record 10 sixes. Sri Lankan bowlers were destroyed and hit to every part of the Sawai Mansingh stadium that day and Dhoni proceeded to write his name in the record books. His innings at that time was the highest score by any batsman in a chase, a record that was broken by Shane Watson when he made 185* against Bangladesh. India won the match comfortably by 6 wickets in hand and Dhoni was named the Man of the match. All stats updated till 11th February 2016.
