7 Best performances of Yuvraj Singh in ICC Events

Yuvraj Singh is one of the few big tournament players that lights up the tournament with his bat or ball and sometimes both. Yuvraj Singh made his debut for India in the ICC Knockout trophy 2000, where he showed glimpses of what to be expected during the coming years. Every Indian thought that they finally got a big hitter in the team that could hit fast bowlers for huge sixes and up the ante in last overs and Yuvraj made a career of doing that. But apart from being one of greatest limited overs batsmen for India, Yuvraj shone when it mattered in the ICC tournaments and here are some of his best moments in ICC events. Next up was the Aussie challenge for India in the quarterfinals and India got off to a running start as Sachin Tendulkar took on Australia’s best bowler in Glen McGrath and deposited him for 2 sixes in an over. But when the big three got out, India was 90/3 and in walked 18-year-old Yuvraj Singh. He had Glen McGrath, Brett Lee and Jason Gillespie in front of him and he played like this was his 100th ODI match. Crisp drives and audacious pull shots marked his innings. He got a little support from Vinod Kambli, but otherwise, he single handedly took India to 265 before getting out for 84 in 80 balls with 12 fours. India had batted first and put on just 261, thanks to Yuvraj’s 62 and Sehwag’s 59. The Proteas were going great guns when at 192, Herschelle Gibbs had to retired hurt due to severe cramps for 116 and that somehow gave India the chance to choke the life out of African chase. Yuvraj had started the proceedings by taking a brilliant catch of Graeme Smith at the start of the match and he took probably the catch which is part of all highlight reels, a catch running from short fine leg to behind the keeper, to dismiss Jonty Rhodes. In this ICC World CUP 2003 clash at Centurion, Pakistan batted first and scored a respectable 273, thanks to 101 from India’s nemesis Saeed Anwar. Though the match is remembered for the brilliant sixes hit by Sachin Tendulkar off Shoaib Akhtar and Virender Sehwag off Waqar Younis and Sachin’s brilliant match-winning innings of 98, when Sachin departed, India still needed 99 runs to win the match. The match was finished by the combo of Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh, who silenced the once again riled up Akhtar and finished the match by hitting a boundary and reaching his 50. 6 sixes of 6 balls vs England ICC World T20 2007 The first ever ICC World T20 needed something big to make it a success and Chris Gayle gave it a start by hitting the first ever century in T20 internationals. But it was Yuvraj Singh that gave the tournament its real identity in the match against England. India was already on their way to a decent total thanks to 136 runs opening partnership between Sehwag (68) and Gambhir (58). But when Yuvraj Singh arrived on the crease in the 17th over, England had no idea what was going to hit them the next over. Yuvi had an argument with Andrew Flintoff and it was a young Stuart Broad who paid for it, as Yuvraj launched all of his 6 balls in that over for huge sixes. In fact his onslaught gave him a 50 off just 12 balls; the fastest ever recorded international fifty. He demolished the attack consisting of Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and Nathan Bracken, making 70 runs off just 30 balls including 5 sixes. He gave Dhoni a 5th bowling option, bowling 10 overs in almost every match. His best all round performance came against Ireland when he picked up 5/31 in the Irish innings, after making 50* while setting a target. Another of his brilliant performances came against West Indies, when he scored his first World Cup century a score of 113 and ensured that India had enough runs in the bank despite a familiar collapse in the end overs. Australia made a fighting 260, thanks to a brilliant and masterful century from their captain Ricky Ponting. India in reply had a good start with Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir making half centuries. But when Dhoni fell for 7 at 187 on board, India still had 70 odd runs to get and Yuvraj along with Suresh Raina made sure that India got to that total. Yuvi remained unbeaten on 57, while Raina contributed 34 runs of 28 balls and India advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament, where they faced arch-rivals Pakistan at Mohali.
