7 cricketers who could not make a comeback in international cricket: The world has seen cricket legends from every corner of the world, some names are embed in the book of history, some are carved in memory and some in the hearts of the cricket fan, who don’t depend on the records and figures to love a player, as some of them couldn’t be a part of the cricket world for a long span. Some heroes were short-lived and less celebrated. Cricketers who started off, had a on and off time in the team and left without being able to show their worth. Reasons are many and so are the fallen heroes, still they have a special place in the memory of times. Here are 7 cricketers who could not make a comeback in international cricket: 1. Mohammad Kaif: Mohammad Kaif was the real hero of India’s win in the Natwest 2002 final. (Photo Source: Reuters) One of the best fielders of the Indian side, Kaif was capped after his performance in the U-19 World Cup, he captained the winning Indian U-19 side. Though, he was always sidelined by the selectors he got himself in, in 2001-2002, and came up with some purposeful batting specially in the Natwest series of 2002 where he played a knock of unbeaten 87 in England, when India successfully chased 326 runs. The 87 was followed by a century in the ICC Champions Trophy against Zimbabwe. Though he failed to deliver during the World Cup and lost his place, and was unable to perform even in the domestic circuit. His exceptional fielding a cover overshadowed his batting form but couldn’t fetch him a permanent place in the Indian squad. Kaif, made a comeback in Test cricket after a year following his impressive performance in the county matches, as a replacement to Sachin Tendulkar who was injured in the second Test in Ahmedabad against South Africa. Marcus Trescothick: Marcus Trescothick played 76 Test matches and 123 ODIs for England. (© Getty Images) The England opener Trescothick played 76 Test matches and 123 ODIs for his team. Suffering from clinical depression Trescothick was criticized for his uncertainty. Things started to change for his career that started in 2000 when in 2006 during England’s tour of India he returned home abruptly. He made a comeback in Test scored a century and the next six matches against Sri Lanka saw only one half-century. Trescothick came back to form after two ODI centuries versus Ireland and Sri Lanka respectively. Though in September he backed out from the remaining ODIs in Pakistan and asked the Board not to consider his name for the ICC Champions Trophy because of his illness. In July 2007, he was included in the T20 World Championship in South Africa but he withdrew his name before the final confirmation date. Trescothick went on to have two-years without a contract from England. There were speculations about his return in the International arena which was put to rest after he announced his retirement. The fallen hero of the Internationals continues to play county cricket. 3. Wasim Jaffer: Wasim Jaffer has been one of the best openers in Indian domestic Cricket. (© Getty Images) Losing his place to Gautam Gambhir, Wasim Jaffer was the Test opener for the Indian side. Jaffer debuted in Test cricket in 2000 against West Indies, soon losing his place. Though, his county performance reminded the selectors of his worth after 3 years in Team A he was recalled in the 3rd Test against Sri Lanka in 2005-06. He made a maiden century against England in Nagpur in 2006 following it up with a double against West Indies in the same year. He then lost his place to the prominent name of the Indian squad, Gautam Gambhir. Meanwhile, he kept on playing county cricket, scoring a triple century and has been a run-machine for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. Though, he never succeeded in finding his way back to the Indian international squad. 4. Ashish Nehra: Ashish Nehra was sidelined after the semi final of World Cup 2011. (Photo Source: AFP ) Ashish Nehra the Indian fast bowler was last seen in an International match back in 2011 World Cup semi-final against Pakistan, where he took 2 wickets from 33 runs. After which he suffered from a finger injury, which kept him from playing in the finals. Since then the Indian pacer kept waiting for a call from the selectors but hasn’t got one. After the peak of his career between 2008-2011, he did not get enough opportunities, with unknown reasons. Nehra has played 120 ODIs for India and taken 157 wickets at an average of 31.72 with the best figure of 6/23. He has also been a part of 17 Test matches and has grabbed a total of 44 wickets. 5. Ramnaresh Sarwan: Ramnaresh Sarwan was a key member of the West Indies team for the most part of his career.(Photo Source: Getty Images) Following the rift between the Board members and Sarwan he became a litigant of the West Indies cricket. Sarwan was away from the team for 18 months as he claimed to be “emotionally and mentally hurt” by the national team’s coaching regime. He lashed out on twitter against the West Indies Board, for his continued non-selection in the team. He was thrown out of the team on the grounds that stated “extremely indifferent attitude and sporadic approach towards fitness.” After he made his comeback in the year 2013 Sarwan failed to prove a point and secure his place in the Caribbean side. He also continues to excel in the county cricket, but is a lost name in the International cricket world. He was a part of the Windies squad for 181 ODIs and 87 Test matches, scoring 5804, 5842 runs respectively. 6. Mohammad Yousuf: Mohammad Yousuf was not even given a reason for his exclusion. (Photo Source: Getty Images) The former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf, has given up hope to return to the International cricket, “I don’t follow cricket now and my focus is not on the sport any more. It is over for me,” Yousuf told PTI. The last time that he played for the Pakistani side was against South Africa in 2010 after that he was sidelined by the Pakistan Cricket Board. Yousuf played for his country in 90 Test matches scoring 7,530 at an average of 52, and made a total of 9720 runs in 288 ODIs. After his long service to Pakistan cricket he was not given any rhyme or reason for is exclusion. He was declared unfit in 2010 tour and came out to prove himself in the domestic cricket, but the Pakistan Board of selectors never looked back or even talked to the ex captain for his exclusion. 7. Stuart MacGill: Stuart McGill came into the Australian team when Shane Warne was at his best. (©Getty Images) The Australian spinner in Warne’s era came into the team at the wrong time. Stuart MacGill was one with the best strike rate. He delivered well in Warne’s absence becoming the leading wicket taker of the series against Pakistan. But Warne was the mainstream spinner of Australian side then, and the selectors didn’t approve of playing two spinners in Tests. He excelled in county cricket and is one of the leading wicket takers. In the Super Series Test against the ICC World XI in 2006, MacGill out-bowled every spinner including Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan and Daniel Vettori.
