A good IPL season can open doors for India’s ODI team, feels Hanuma Vihari
"I have been performing well for the last couple of years at the domestic level."
Hanuma Vihari has been one of the youngsters who made a promising debut for India in the longer format. He hit a fifty in the debut Test in England and also opened the innings for the team’s interest in Australia despite being a middle-order batsman. While his place in the Test team looks fixed, the question is now whether the Andhra batsman can show his worth in the limited-over versions as well?
Vihari, who is currently playing in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament, is set to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year for Delhi Capitals (DC) and given the fact that he has established himself on the international stage, eyes will be on him to see whether the 25-year-old can be as fit a player in the slam-bang formats.
He has played in the IPL in the 2013 and 2015 seasons and has scored 280 runs in 22 matches with an average of 15 and at a strike rate of 89.45. He played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier and will now try his luck with the revamped Delhi side which picked him for Rs 2 crore in the auction in December last year.
Vihari, in an exclusive interview to Times Now recently spoke about his target to make it to India’s ODI team and the cricketer he saw as a role model while growing up.
IPL might be a good push for me
When asked whether a productive IPL season will open his doors for India’s limited-overs team, Vihari replied in the affirmative. “Surely! I have been performing well for the last couple of years at the domestic level. You can look at the white-ball stats as well, and I feel IPL might be a good push for me to have a position in the One-day setup. I am looking forward to it,” the talented batsman who averages around 20 in T20s and has a strike rate of around 112 said.
He also named Sachin Tendulkar as his role model like many youngsters and will be aspiring to become a player like him.
