The star player of South Africa AB de Villiers dropped a bombshell on his fans and teammates by deciding to retire from international cricket with immediate effect. Very few saw this coming as he was playing beautifully and had made a lasting impact in the Test series against India and Australia which the Proteas won. While it was a surprising decision, everyone respected it and congratulated him on a wonderful career. However, De Villiers is now overwhelmed with all the love and support and has thanked everyone for the same.

The 34-years-old ended his career in the Green and Gold by playing 114 Tests, 228 ODIs and 78 T20 Internationals. He created and broke a lot of records during his 14-year long career and was the major threats with the bat to the opposition. Recently, he was plying his trade in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and had brought his ‘A’ game to the fore in most of the matches. Unfortunately, he will not be part of the World Cup squad of South Africa which will travel England next year.

Thank you tweet of ABD

AB de Villiers, after more than 24 hours of his decision to retire, took to Twitter and thanked everyone for supporting and respecting him. He once again admitted that the last few days were extremely emotional and tough for him and his family. “Thank you to everyone – especially the players past and present, MY TEAMMATES and opponents – for their good wishes and understanding. The last few days have been tough and emotional, but I’m taken aback by all the love and support! for life,” his tweet read.

Here’s De Villiers’ tweet:

Earlier in the day, he was also surprised that the fans and the teammates accepted his decision with open arms. “I wasn’t expecting a positive response, to be honest. It was a really tough decision – I’ve been struggling with it for a while, and I’m just glad we got through it. Now it’s a bit of family time, and a bit of time at home,” he was quoted as saying by www.iol.co.za. De Villiers has already made it clear that he will continue to be available for the Titans in domestic cricket and will also play in the IPL.
