AB de Villiers to miss out the only ODI against Ireland
South African skipper AB de Villiers has been given additional time to recover from an elbow injury sustained in August and thus will miss out on the One Day International (ODI) match against Ireland in Benoni on Sunday.
South Africa is hopeful that he will be fit for the series against Australia starting on September 30 at the Centurion. Faf du Plessis will lead the squad in his absence and the left-hand batsman Rilee Rossouw, has been added as cover for de Villiers.
De Villiers had already missed out on the 2-match Test series against New Zealand because of this injury, which is also the first time he is missing out on a Test series due to injury ever since he made his debut in 2004.
“AB has been on a rigorous rehabilitation and treatment plan for the last six weeks but is still complaining of pain in the elbow region. We consulted with a specialist, who advised extensive rehab and injected the elbow with cortisone. However, the CSA medical committee has recommended a few more days of rehab to allow the elbow to improve,” said the South African manager Mohammed Moosajee.

He also said that the Ab de Villiers will undergo treatment with physiotherapist Brandon Jackson and his availability for Australia series depends on the fitness test.
“He will undergo treatment this week with our physiotherapist, and a final call on his availability for the first ODI against Australia will be subject to him passing a fitness test. While surgery remains the last option, we hope that the extra time will allow the injury to respond to treatment.”
