Abhishek Nayar might move to Ranji Trophy debutants Puducherry this season
Nayar was dropped by Mumbai mid-way through the previous season.
Veteran Mumbai cricketer Abhishek Nayar who was recently in the news as Dinesh Karthik credited him for the late revival of his international career. However, his domestic team Mumbai decided to drop him mid-way through the last Ranji Trophy season and he certainly seems to have fallen out of their future plans. The 34-year-old now has a standing offer in hand from the Cricket Association of Puducherry (CAP) to join the Puducherry team as player cum mentor.
CAP came into existence after the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) made the announcement that Puducherry team is eligible to play in the Indian domestic circuit. CAP after approaching the cricketer seemed certain that he would choose to be with them. As per reports, officials from the association claimed that Nayar has agreed to feature for them in the upcoming domestic season.
Nayar, on the other hand, told Sportstar on Monday evening that he ‘hasn’t decided anything on the offer’ yet. CAP secretary P. Damodaran said that Nayar will not be able to coach the team due to other commitments but he might move there as a player.
Might join in just as a player
“We had approached him (Nayar) to represent as a player-cum-coach. He can’t take up coaching responsibilities since he has other commitments but he may be available as a player,” Damodaran was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
The Mumbaikar in his career has played 99 first-class matches and is better known for mentoring young players. He has worked with some of star Indian cricketers like Karthik and Rohit Sharma. He has his own methods that he uses to help players get over the challenges that seem to be a hurdle in their career.
Nayar having played 60 matches in his Indian Premier League (IPL) career with teams like Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab, Pune Warriors and Rajasthan Royals was a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders coaching staff in the IPL 2018 season.
