We accept to enter Champions Trophy as underdogs, says Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford
"There are some high-quality performers in every team. The group we are up against has some fantastic cricketers. We have to be at our best," he quoted.
Team Sri Lanka is raring to go into the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy. Their head coach, Graham Ford is confident of putting a good show in the tournament. They have not been in the best of forms in the recent times when it comes to ODI cricket. They had suffered a defeat against South Africa in the away fixtures earlier this year. Recently, they hosted Bangladesh for a short ODI series but were stunned by the series-leveling efforts of the men in green.
Hence, they are definitely not in the happiest of places at the moment in terms of team morale. However, their coach Graham Ford believes that the team is capable of doing well in England. They recently have had a high altitude training session in Kandy. Ford cited that going in the tournament as underdogs can actually serve as blessing in disguise for the team. He noted that there are quality players in almost every opposition.
“We have to be realistic and accept that we go into this tournament as underdogs. Sometimes that is a good place to be. We will just be going one game at a time. It is no point in looking past the next game. In world cricket today, every single match that you play is tough,” said Graham Ford as per the quotes in Zee News.
“There are some high-quality performers in every team. The group we are up against has some fantastic cricketers. We have to be at our best,” he added.
Skipper shares his opinion
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews is also confident of putting up a good show. He is sure that his team will improve as the tournament progresses and the 15-man squad is a strong unit.
“We will definitely improve day by day and I am sure the boys are up to the challenge. We don’t have time for hiccups in a tournament like this,” Mathews quoted.
