World number three badminton player India’s Kidambi Srikanth has enjoyed a royal run this season. He won super series after other to end up with four titles straight and had the best year of his career rising to the highest individual rank as well. Recently he said that he has come a long way in sports and unlike olden times cricket is not the only big sport in India.

Srikanth and cricket

Srikanth was recently asked about the sports he likes to watch and cricket was a part of it. He believes that India has made rapid strides in the world of sports and people are now intrigued by other sports as well. Former cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar have also encouraged and endorsed sports other than cricket.

“Yes, cricket is not the only big sport now in India. I think the mindset has changed. People now want to watch various sports and that’s one of the reasons why I think a sport like badminton has got such a great platform. As athletes, we always work hard and we always want to win. Yes, three-four years back we haven’t seen such great results, but now athletes from other sports have done really well. And that has made a big impact on people,” said Srikanth to Khaleej Times.

India is a cricket-obsessed nation and this is a very positive change in the country believes Kidambi. 2017 has been a fantastic year for Indian sports, the sportspersons have produced wonderful results. People moved a step further with cricket as the women’s cricket team made it to the world cup finals.

The nation is witnessing a huge change as we are encouraging other sports and players as well. All Indian athletes have done a commendable job in 2017, from hosting the under-17 FIFA World Cup to India moving up in the FIFA rankings. The hockey team recently won a bronze in the World Championship this year has brought plenty of sporting laurels for the nation.
