One would be wondering as to how a cricketer, who retired from international cricket quite a while ago will be dreaming of lifting the World Cup. No, there isn’t any comeback on cards for Afridi, in case you are wondering. The Afridi who wants to lift the World Cup is not the legendary Shahid Afridi. Interestingly, it is another Afridi from Pakistan who has set his eyes on the World Cup this time.
Shaheen Shah Afridi is the Afridi who is desperately trying to get hold of the World Cup. The 17-year old is currently playing the Under-19 World Cup for Pakistan in New Zealand. He is inspired by the stories of Pakistan’s triumph in the 1992 World Cup and 2009 T20 WC. Pakistan stands second the in Group-D points table. They played two matches so far. They won a game and lost the other.
Shaheen Afridi proving to be highly impressive
The young fast bowler is now a red-hot commodity in the cricket world. Afridi has already established himself as one of the premier bowlers of the tournament. Blessed with an over six feet frame added with blistering pace, it seems just a matter of time that the youngster would be making his international debut for the country. The 17-year old has been impressive in both the matches that he played today.
In the first match against Afghanistan, his figures read 10-0-27-1. Although he was impressive in that game, he was even more belligerent in the second game against Ireland. Afridi picked six wickets conceding just 15 runs at an amazing economy rate of 1.7. He was also named the player of the match in that game.
Being one of the first to be picked for his side in the ongoing tournament, Afridi feels that the team needs to be positive to win the tournament. “It will be a dream to win the cup for Pakistan. I remember my brother telling me stories when they had won it all that time ago. For us to be successful, we shouldn’t take any pressure because it only brings the anxiety so just think positively,” said Afridi.
