Australian cricket has been hit by a massive controversy in Port Elizabeth when Cameron Bancroft was caught in a heinous crime of ball-tampering. A person by a name of Zotani Oscar, a South African cameraman, busted the Aussie cricketer while attempting the horrendous act by churning out a video footage. Social media was thereafter flooded with criticism from every nook and corner of the world. However, Steve Smith accepted to having committed the crime while being aware of the act beforehand.

Subsequently, Smith and Warner have stepped down as the captain and the vice-captain respectively, for the remainder of the ongoing Test match against South Africa. Meanwhile, Tim Paine, the Tasmanian cricketer, has been appointed as the stand-in skipper.  Recently, Alastair Cook, who is currently playing in New Zealand, has also opined on the matter in a recent interaction with BBC’s Test Match Special.

“It’s sad for cricket”- Cook

The cricketer brought forth their sledging tactics and their antics on the field as a reason for their demise.  “You live and die by the sword. The guys who are in the limelight have a responsibility to play cricket in the right way. It’s sad for cricket,” he remarked. The English cricketer also mentioned about the mental pressure a captain goes through while captaining a national team.

Meanwhile, he also highlighted England’s abysmal performance in the opening day of the inaugural Day/Night Test in New Zealand. “There are days when things don’t go your way – and the first day here in Auckland was a prime example of that – but there is always a way to get back into the game. I’m sure Steve Smith is not in a very comfortable position – and in one sense you do feel for him because I know what the pressure is like as captain of a country,” Alastair Cook added.
