Amitabh Bachchan mocks the ICC after England won the World Cup on ‘boundary count’
Martin Guptill's run-out in the one-over eliminator brought an end to the game.
The 2019 World Cup came to a rather dramatic end with England and New Zealand batting it out at the Lord’s. The match at the iconic venue had all the ingredients to keep the audience at the edge of their seats and it lived up to expectations. However, the game came to a rather bizarre end as the Three Lions, led by Eoin Morgan, won on account of hitting more boundaries.
After the Kiwis won the toss and elected to bat, there were numerous twists and turns. Kane Williamson and Co put up 241 on the board and the target wasn’t expected to pose much of a threat to the English batting, which had demolished Australia in the semi-final at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. But the home team had to strain every muscle in the run-chase.
Not even half-way through their innings, their top four- Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan and Joe Root- were back in the pavilion. The onus was then on Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes to bail their team out and the duo did so with expertise, without much fuss. Stokes remained not out on 84 and helped his team tie the game, which also meant that the encounter went into the Super Over.
England got home in the humdinger
The hosts scored 15 runs off Trent Boult and the Kiwis had to score 16 in order to win the championship. A tie wouldn’t have been sufficient for the Black Caps as they were low on ‘boundary count’. Facing Jofra Archer, James Neesham brought the target down to two off the last ball. Martin Guptill patted one on the leg-side and got the single, but couldn’t complete the second run.
He fell way short of the crease as Roy along with Buttler ran him out. Following the nail-biter, many expressed disappointment towards the result of the game being decided on ‘boundary count’. Recently, Amitabh Bachchan, the evergreen Bollywood actor, took a dig at the International Cricket Council (ICC). The veteran put up a hilarious tweet for the apex cricket board.
Here is the English translation of the tweet: “You have Rs 2,000, I have Rs 2,000. You have one note of 2,000; I have four notes of 500. Who is richer? ICC: The one who has four notes of 500 is richer.”
