Video: An unplayable and one of the best yorkers by Irfan Pathan to Adam Gilchrist
“Yorker”, has to be one of the most lethal balls in cricket and something with maximum success rate. But how often do you see yorkers in test cricket ?
Yes, it isn’t that common a occurance. And when a bowler does bowl a yorker the outcome is fruitful.
Irfan Pathan, one of the best swing bowlers in Indian cricket history delivered probably one of the best ever yorker with the red ball.
It was a ball that marked the entrance of one of the best all- rounders in world cricket. Pathan and also other pacers who could swing the ball in either way, always enjoyed bowling in Australia, especially when the ball reverse swings. Any fast bowler enjoys bowling yorkers when there is reverse swing.
When Irfan bowled that yorker, he knew that he had set Gilchrist up for it quite well. It was a nicely setup delivery. Before that, he had bowled quite a few away going deliveries to Gilly. Generally, when a bowler bowls a few away going deliveries to a batsman, then, in the next delivery, he tries to bowl an inswinger to surprise the batsman. Pathan did the same. So after bowling many outswingers, he needed to make sure that he get him out bowled or leg-before and not caught behind. For that, he needed to bowl fuller. He attempted the yorker before that as well but it didn’t work. Those unsuccessful yorkers were followed by a delivery that was rightly attempted, targeted and finally implemented. That particular ball was an absolute beauty un-playable. The line and length of that delivery was well supported by the in swing. That yorker moved further in late and it dipped on Adam’s legs. And, in the later stages of his career as well, he had bowled out Matthew Hayden in a ODI at Kochi with a splendid yorker. We can trace some of other yorkers of Pathan as well. But this one to Gilchrist will stay up there because it was special.Talking about Irfan Pathan’s cricketing career, he was confident on making a come back to Indian national cricket team. And as the proverb suggests “God helps the brave..” ; let us hope that this man can yet again be seen in the blue jersey.
