Aravinda de Silva to take up advisory role in Sri Lankan Cricket
We have convinced him to help us out with the Sri Lankan team in dire straits: SLC official.
Looking at the series of humiliating losses in the calendar year of 2017, Sri Lankan Cricket has decided to rope in former captain Aravinda de Silva to take up senior advisory role. De Silva is all set to head the support staff of the senior team with the personnel reporting to him.
Due to differences in opinion, the former Sri Lankan great stepped down from his post in SLC’s Cricket committee, which comprises of several former Test captain, back in May this year.
“With the Sri Lankan team in total disarray, we need someone with Aravinda’s vision to put things back on track. He will be given full control over matters pertaining to international cricket,” stated a senior SLC official according to Cricbuzz on Sunday.
De Silva to interview candidates for Head Coach post
Sri Lanka suffered a string of defeats this year starting from their torrid tour to South Africa, where they were whitewashed by 3-0 in Tests and 5-0 in ODIs. For the first time in Test history, they were defeated by Bangladesh in Tests.
To rub salt into the wounds, they even lost the bilateral series against Zimbabwe at home by a margin of 3-2, following their early exit in the Champions Trophy. India completed their 9-0 tour whitewash last week to add to the Sri Lankan misery.
De Silva’s first job at hand would be to interview candidates for the role of head coach, which fell vacant after the abrupt resignation from Graham Ford. Aravinda de Silva apparently wasn’t amused to see attempts made by administrators to undermine the role of Ford, with whom he shared a good rapport with.
“He wasn’t very keen when we first approached him as he is heavily involved with his business. But we have convinced him to help us out with the Sri Lankan team in dire straits,” added the anonymous source.
