'Are they drunk?' - Twitter goes crazy after seeing a 'age goof-up' over Shafali Verma
Verma made her ODI debut against England on Sunday, June 27.
The young batter of the India women’s team Shafali Verma has been rising through the ranks incredibly. After shining too well in the Tests, Verma marked her ODI debut against England on June 27. She again played a fearless brand of cricket and smashed three straight boundaries in the first five overs. However, this time around, another aspect apart from her great game, grabbed the attention of fans.
While Verma was on with her game, a goof-up from the broadcaster’s end sent Twitteratis into a state of amusement. The stats presented by Sony Ten and Sky Sports showed her age to be 28 which stunned all. The youngster is just 17 and the age gap of 11 years sent fans into a frenzy. This erupted a huge meme fest on the microblogging site.
Though Verma was expected to score big on her ODI debut, she got out on her 14th delivery when she mistimed a pull shot against Katherine Brunt. Her partner and India’s ace batsman Smriti Mandhana also struggled to get going and failed to fetch nig numbers. She went back after scoring just 10 runs off 25 balls.
Mithali Raj opens up on Shafali Verma and her style of playing as a youngster
However, a small failure won’t be expected to hamper the game of the youngster in near future. Before the start of the game, skipper Mithali Raj added that she wishes to play the 17-year-old without any burden. She wanted her to enjoy her own style of playing.
“That’s how she plays, her strength and style of batting. There will be times when she gives us a headstart. She’s a young kid, she’ll also learn to build an innings. As a captain, I want her to enjoy her style of playing. If we lose early wickets, we as middle order are there to rebuild, or if we get a good start, take the momentum forward. We have the batting depth to do that,” said Raj as quoted by Sportskeeda.
