Ashes 2019: Jonny Bairstow hilariously fools Steve Smith; this time with the bat
Jonny Bairstow 2 - 0 Steve Smith.
2-0 – This is the score in favour of Jonny Bairstow in his interesting and hilarious duel against Steve Smith in the ongoing fifth Ashes Test at the Oval. While the England and Australia players are fighting it out to win the crunch clash in London, both Smith and Bairstow are enjoying their duel on the field and the latter have won both the rounds so far. The contest has been about Bairstow fooling Smith and the latter has fallen in the pit on both the occasions.
In the first round, Bairstow hilariously managed to trick Smith into diving for his life as he tried to get back in the crease. With Bairstow pretending as if he was preparing to collect the throw to run Smith out, the latter ran for his life and made a desperate dive. It was only after he got up that Smith realized he had been tricked into diving without the ball being anywhere near the keeper’s gloves. The throw, in fact, came at the bowler’s end.
Smith could do nothing but sport an embarrassing look on his face. And as if it was not enough, Bairstow made a mockery of the former Australia skipper once again. This time, Bairstow had the bat in his hands while Smith was standing in the sleep. The incident took place on day three of the Test on Saturday.
On the second delivery of the 66th over, Nathan Lyon bowled a full ball wide outside of off-stump. Bairstow first thought of sweeping the ball before changing his mind at the last moment. The right-hander changed his stance and guided the ball through the slip cordon, catching Smith off guard.
Smith missed to catch the ball and what followed thereafter was nothing less than hilarious. The former Australia skipper expressed his frustration and was yelling as he blamed Bairstow for fooling him twice in two days.
Here is a clip of that incident:
England in command:
England have put themselves in the driver’s seat after a fine show with the bat in the second innings. Riding on Joe Denly’s 94, the hosts finished on 313-8 to take their lead to a huge 382. England have already conceded the Ashes but have the chance to draw the series.
