Australia breached the Edgbaston fortress to defeat England by 251 runs in the first Ashes 2019 Test. England team were the clear favorite to win the Edgbaston game before the series started but the former No.1 Test batsman, Steve Smith had other plans as he smashed twin tons to keep Australia’s pride alive. The comeback batsman smacked 144 of 219 in the first innings and 142 off 207 in the second innings. Matthew Wade, Travis Head and the lower order also helped Smith to grab a big Aussie victory.
The hosts England were hit by a huge blow on the first day of the Edgbaston Test when they got to know about James Anderson’s calf injury. The pacer bowled just four overs on Day 1 and left the field due to some discomfort. He, however, came out to bat in both the innings, but the damage was already done for the hosts as they were short of their premium bowler.
England selectors made a few changes to the second Test squad. Injured pacers Olly Stone and James Anderson are excluded from the team to bring in Jack Leach. Moeen Ali, who had a bad outing in the Edgbaston game, has been omitted for the Lord’s Test as well. Pace sensation Jofra Archer is most likely to replace James Anderson in the much-anticipated game.
Vaughan makes changes to his XI
Meanwhile, former England captain, Michael Vaughan, who is vocal with his opinions on social media, has revealed his England playing XI for the Lord’s Test. Vaughan has picked Jofra Archer, Jack Leach and Sam Curran in his XI, leaving out James Anderson, Joe Denly and Moeen Ali.
He came up with a tweet, writing, “My team for Lords … Burns, Roy, Rooooottttt, Stokes, Jos, Jonny, Sam Curran, Woakes, Jofra, Broad & Leach … #Ashes”

The second Ashes 2019 Test at Lord’s Cricket Ground starts from 14th of August. Tim Paine’s Australia will aim to extend the series lead and stamp their authority on hosts, whereas England side will surely be bolstered with Jofra Archer’s return and their sole aim is to keep Aussies on the back foot from the word go and to level the series 1-1.
