England’s misery continued in the third Ashes Test against Australia. Asked to bat first at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Three Lions got out for a paltry 185 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The likes of Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon made the red cherry as the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals. Like the previous contest, skipper Joe Root was the only England batter who showed some resistance.

The Three Lions were reeling at 13/2 when Root arrived in the middle. While the likes of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc were spitting venom with the ball, the 30-year-old showcased remarkable intent and played some delightful shots all over the park. He even advanced to his half-century but got out just after reaching the landmark.

Joe Root fell prey to Mitchell Starc

It was a good length delivery from Mitchell Starc which Root couldn’t tackle with precision and edged it behind the stumps where wicketkeeper Alex Carey took a safe catch. With Root being the batter in form, Australia were delighted after ending his stay in the middle. Root was also visibly frustrated as he couldn’t control his emotions.

In a video shared by cricket.com.au’s Twitter page, Root can be seen swinging his bat in frustration after being caught behind off Starc’s bowling. He also uttered few words which made his disappointment evident. The clip went viral in no time as netizens offered support to the English skipper. After all, he has often been the lone warrior in the batting department.

In fact, Root’s tally of 1680 Test runs in 2021 is third-highest by any batter in 2021. However, most of these runs have come in losing causes. In fact, the Three Lions were dominated at home by India and New Zealand earlier this year. This shows how other England batters have been performing.

Meanwhile, Australia finished at day at 61/1 with David Warner being the only batter dismissed. Given the current scorecard, the Aussies are firmly in command and it would be interesting to see whether the Three Lions can bounce back or not. It must be noted that the visitors lost the first two Tests of the five-match series. Hence, the Melbourne clash is a must-win game for them.
