Asia Cup 2018: Tamim Iqbal suffers a finger injury; in doubt for the tournament opener
Bangladesh will face Sri Lanka in the first game on September 15.
The much-awaited Asia Cup is approaching fast with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka all set to lock horns in the first game. This edition of the tournament is being tipped to be the closest one as most of the teams have an equal chance of winning it. But Bangladesh have been dealt with a severe blow ahead of the tournament opener as their veteran opener Tamim Iqbal has suffered an injury and is now in doubt for the first encounter of his team.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has already roped in Mominul Haque as Tamim’s cover in the squad. But Tamim has been the rock for the Tigers over the years and is in great form. It was his amazing batting which won them the ODI series against Windies in the Caribbean recently.
Tamim injured his finger during the fielding session which didn’t seem to be serious at that stage. But when the pain persisted for a long time, he was sent for an X-Ray which revealed a fracture to his right-hand finger.
Mominul might play
The chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu informed the reporters about an injury to Tamim Iqbal and also went on to say that Mominul might play the first game against Sri Lanka if required. As of now, he is only doubtful for the clash and it remains to be seen if his finger recuperates in time with the game scheduled to be played on September 15.
“Tamim has hurt his finger. So we have kept Mominul Haque as a possible replacement if need be. He (Mominul) could play in case of necessity,” he was quoted as saying by bdcrictime. As far as the injuries are concerned, their key member Shakib Al Hasan is also under a serious threat of aggravating his finger injury and he needed surgery to it. But the possibility of missing the elite Asian tournament has kept him devoid of the same.
