AUS vs IND, 2020: 1st ODI – Milestones for Finch and Smith, Australia’s record total and more stats

Australia took a 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series against India as they registered a comfortable 66-run win during the Sydney ODI. Centuries from Steve Smith (105 off 66) and Aaron Finch (114 from 124) played a key role in getting Australia to a huge total of 374/6. In reply, India raced to the 50-run mark in only 4.1 overs but were four wickets down for 101 in only 14 overs. Hardik Pandya’s 76-ball 90 and Shikhar Dhawan’s 74 helped India stay alive in the chase before Adam Zampa dismissed the duo. Despite some late hitting from their tail, India could only make 308/8 in their 50 overs.

A high-scoring game to start the series:

682 – A total of 682 runs were aggregated by both Australia and India during the first ODI; the 2nd most number of runs scored during an ODI game hosted by Australia. The highest aggregated ODI in Australia was between the hosts and Sri Lanka also at the SCG during the 2015 CWC where a total of 688 runs were scored.

374/6 – The total of 374/6 is the highest for Australia in ODI format against India and is also the 2nd highest total recorded during AUS vs IND ODIs behind India’s 383/6 in the 2013 Bangalore ODI.

India’s losing streak continues:

6 – India has lost each of their last six matches in the International cricket which is their longest such streak since the 2002-03 season where they lost as many as seven in succession. India lost the decider ODI against West Indies at home in 2002 which was followed by a 0-2 Test series defeat and four consecutive ODI losses during the 2002-03 tour of New Zealand.

4 – India has lost all four ODI matches since defeating Australia in the Bangalore ODI earlier in January this year. This is the longest losing streak in the ODI format for India under Virat Kohli’s captaincy. This is also the first time that India lost four or more consecutive ODIs since the 2015-16 season where they suffered five successive ODI defeats.

Warner-Finch provides a big start:

13 – The pair of David Warner and Aaron Finch completed 1000 partnership runs in ODI cricket against India in only 13 stands. They are now the fastest pair to share 1000 ODI partnership runs against an opponent in terms of innings. The Indian pair of Virat Kohli-Gautam Gambhir was previous the quickest as they needed only 14 stands to complete 1000 partnership runs in ODIs against Sri Lanka.

1148 – Warner-Finch pair have put on 1148 runs for the first wicket in ODI cricket against India which makes them only the 8th opening pair with 1000+ partnership runs in ODIs against an opponent. They are also only the 8th pair with 1000+ ODI partnership runs against India.

11 – The 156-run stand on Friday between Finch and Warner was their 11th-century partnership in ODI cricket. Only Adam Gilchrist-Matthew Hayden pair (16) have had more century stands in ODIs for Australia than the Finch-Warner duo.

Five of the 11 century stands in ODI cricket by Finch-Warner pair came in Australia only which are the joint-most for any opening pair in ODI format on Australian soil.

Milestones for Finch and Smith:

16 – Steve Smith completed 1000 runs in the ODI format against in India in only 16 innings; the fastest to 1000 ODI runs in terms of innings against India. Smith scored 1012 runs at an average of 63.25 against India in ODIs with help of four hundreds and five fifties. Smith’s average of 63.25 against India is the 7th highest for any player against an opponent in Men’s ODIs. (Min: 1000 runs)

126 – Aaron Finch completed 5000 runs in ODI cricket when he reached his individual score of 17. He is now the 2nd fastest to 5000 runs in ODIs for Australia after David Warner (115) taking 126 innings. Finch is also the 4th quickest to 17 centuries in ODI cricket in terms of innings.

India fails to pick early wickets yet again:

4 – India had conceded opening partnerships of 80+ runs in each of their last four matches in the ODI format. This is the first time since 1997 that India had conceded fifty-plus stands in four successive ODIs. India had two such streaks in 1997 and one each in 1983 and during the 1996 CWC.

Hardik @ 1000 ODI runs:

857 – Hardik Pandya completed 1000 runs in the ODI format in 857 balls; the fewest number of balls taken by an Indian to reach the milestone. Kedar Jadhav was the previous fastest in terms of balls for India as he reached his milestone in 937 deliveries.

13 – Hardik Pandya became the 13th player in Men’s ODI cricket to complete the all-round double of 1000+ runs and 50+ wickets for India. The Sydney ODI was the 55th game of Hardik’s ODI career and got to 50 ODI wickets in 52 matches.

Hardik keeps India’s hopes alive:

90 – Hardik Pandya’s 90 during the AUS vs IND ODI is now the highest ODI score by an Indian in Australia while batting at No.6 or lower position. The previous highest was an unbeaten 88 by MS Dhoni back in 2008 at the Gabba against Sri Lanka.

Pandya’s 90-run knock is also the 4th highest ODI score by a visiting player in Australia while batting at No.6 or a lower position. Jacob Oram’s unbeaten 101 off 72 balls in the 2007 Perth ODI tops the list.

90 – The 90 runs scored by Pandya are the 2nd most during an away ODI chase in the last 18 years for India while batting at No.6 and lower position. Only Yusuf Pathan is ahead of Pandya for scoring a 70-ball 105 against South Africa during the 2011 Centurion ODI.

Pandya’s 90 is also the highest score for India while batting at No.6 or lower during an away ODI since Kedar Jadhav’s 105* against Zimbabwe in the 2015 Harare ODI.

Zampa’s best at home:

4/54 – Adam Zampa’s 4-wicket haul on Friday was his maiden 4-fer in ODI format while playing at home. Zampa, in fact, became the first Australian spinner to claim a 4-fer during a home ODI against India. Zampa is also the first Aussie leg-spinner to pick an ODI 4-fer since Shane Warne in 2001 (4/48 vs WI in Melbourne).
