The Women’s Cricket tournament at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 will kick start with the first match on Friday that is set to be played between India and Australia. World Champions Australia will be the hot favourites while walking into the contest. The Women in Yellow have proved to be a formidable side and given their recent form, they are likely to have a podium finish at the event.

Australia lifted the T20 World Cup in March 2020 by defeating India in the final on their home soil in Melbourne. The team then went on to win the ODI World Cup in April 2022 by defeating England in the final in Christchurch. India and Australia have always given out tough competitions whenever they clash, and this one will be no less.

While Australia is backed with multiple victories in the recently concluded tri-series against Pakistan and Ireland, India is backed with a 2-1 T20I series win against Sri Lanka. But the Women in Blue will face a major setback as their ace all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar will be out of the combination. She was infected with the COVID-19 virus and had to stay back in India when the Indian team took off.

The Aussies do not have any injury or health concerns in their camp, and thus it will be difficult for a covid-hit Indian side to sail past the world champions. India will have to put out their best game, without making any single error as they can’t risk it against Australia. Both the skippers- Meg Lanning and Harmanpreet Kaur are eyeing a Gold medal and will lead their teams boldly.

Pitch Conditions

All fixtures of the Commonwealth Games 2022 will be hosted at Edgbaston. The surface has generally assisted the batters more than the bowlers, and thus the team batting first will have the advantage. The pitch will aid the bowlers as it is used, and thus the captain winning the toss would look to defend the total. A score around 170-180 would be a defendable total.

Playing Combinations for AUS-W vs IND-W

Australia

The Aussies will look to dominate India with the help of the strong lineup they have. Ellyse Perry will be back into the squad, and that will give the team a major all-round option. The top-order batters will look to provide the side with a terrific start and give the middle-order batters momentum to carry forward.

Predicted Playing XI: Alyssa Healy (wk), Beth Mooney, Meg Lanning (c), Ellyse Perry, Tahlia McGrath, Rachael Haynes, Ashleigh Gardner, Nicola Carey, Jess Jonassen, Alana King, Megan Schutt

India

It surely won’t be a cakewalk for India. Shafali Verma is in good touch, but Smriti Mandhana will have to gear up. Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur’s form in the T20 format, including the franchise-based games, have been terrific and they’ve been a force to reckon with. Thus, they will yet again prove to be a crucial factor in the game.

Predicted Playing XI: Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Harleen Deol, Renuka Singh, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav
