Australia climb up to sixth position in ICC T20I Rankings
This victory against India in the second T20I gave Australia a much-needed point and consequently, the team overtook the Proteas to claim the sixth spot.
The recently concluded series between India and Australia saw the latter climb up a rung in the ICC T20I Team Rankings. With the T20I series ending in a 1-1 scenario, India has remained rock-solid at the fifth position in the rankings, while Australia have climbed up to clinch the sixth spot. The David Warner-led side has been able to gain the coveted ranking point owing to their victory against India in the second T20I game at Guwahati.
Although the series was slated to be a 3-match affair, unfavourable conditions saw the third match getting abandoned, without a single delivery being bowled. Owing to the wet outfield at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad, the match was called off after several inspections were made. The trophy was shared between the two teams for having levelled the series 1-1.
Australia overtake the Proteas
The Aussies came into the series with a ranking of 7 in the T2o format. The first match was unable to provide them with a breakthrough in the otherwise abysmal tour that it had been for the visiting team. However, Australia were able to turn the tables in the second T20 as they won convincingly by 8-wickets. This victory gave them a much-needed point and consequently, the Australian team overtook the Proteas to claim the sixth spot.
India remained steady at the fifth position. Being the current No.1 side in both Tests as well as the ODIs, the Men in Blue would have hoped to better their figures but were unable to do so. It’ll be their aim to exercise the best of their potential against New Zealand in the upcoming home tour so that they’re able to climb up the ladder. The top 4 ranks in the shortest format of the game are currently possessed by New Zealand, Pakistan, West Indies and England respectively.
