Australia v Pakistan 3rd Test – Statistical Highlights

Australia finished the whitewash in the 3-match Test series against Pakistan after bagging a huge 220-run win at Sydney starting 2017 on a victorious note. David Warner gave explosive starts in both the innings while the youngsters Matt Renshaw and Peter Handscomb guided the home side to a huge total.  Younis Khan’s unbeaten 175 in the first innings was the only positive for Pakistan as they were bowled out under 350 in both the innings. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the game.

0 – Number of 5-wicket hauls recorded in this Test series. This is only the 2nd Test series with 3 or more matches without a 5-wicket haul. The 3-match series in 1964/65 between Pakistan and New Zealand also was without any 5-wicket hauls.

1 – Azhar Ali became the first visiting opener to score 400+ runs in a 3-match Test series in Australia. Len Hutton scored 411 runs in 3 matches as opener in 1950/51 series but it was a 5-match series.

2 – Younis Khan became the 2nd player in Test cricket to score Test centuries in all the 10 Test nations. Rahul Dravid was the first one to achieve the feat.

4 – Sydney Test was the 4th Test where Nathan Lyon conceded 100+ runs in both innings, the joint 2nd most times by any bowler. Anil Kumble and Arthur Mailey had done so on 5 occasions.

6 – Number of consecutive Tests that Pakistan lost. This is their longest losing streak in Test cricket. They lost in 5 consecutive Tests in 1999.

7.53 – Australia’s run rate in the 2nd innings, the highest for any team scoring 100+ in an innings. West Indies had a run rate of 6.82 against India in 1983 at Kingston where they scored 173/6.

8.85 – Yasir Shah’s economy rate in the 2nd innings, the worst for any bowler who bowled 10 overs. Bangladesh’s Shahadat Hossain had an economy of 8.41 in England’s 2nd innings at Lord’s in 2005.

11 – Younis Khan became the 1st player ever in Test cricket to score Test centuries in 11 countries. He has scored at least one in all 10 nations and also in UAE. Rahul Dravid, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Mohammad Yousuf scored centuries in 10 countries.

23 – Balls taken by David Warner for his fifty in the 2nd innings, it is the 2nd fastest in Test history. Misbah-ul-Haq scored fifty in 21 balls at Abu Dhabi against Australia in 2014.

34 – Number of centuries Younis Khan has scored in Test cricket so far, the joint 6th most by any player. And the most by an active cricketer in Test at this point in time.

76 – Runs scored by Misbah-ul-Haq in this series, the fewest by a Pakistani captain in a Test series batting in top 6. (Min: 6 innings) Mushtaq Mohammad scored 77 runs in the 6 innings he batted in top 6 during the Australia series in 1976/77.

169 – Balls taken by Australia to get to 200 in their 2nd innings, the fastest team 200 in Test cricket of matches the ball data is available. Previous fastest was in 187 balls by South Africa in their 2nd innings against Australia at Perth in 2012.

406 – Runs scored by Azhar Ali in this Test series, the most by a Pakistani player in a series in Australia. Mohsin Khan scored 390 runs in 1983/84 series.

672 – Runs conceded by Yasir Shah in this Test series, the most by any player in a 3-match series. Muttiah Muralitharan conceded 649 runs in home series against Australia in 2004.

1148 – Runs scored by Younis Khan in Tests against Australia. He became the 5th Pakistan player to aggregate 1000 Test runs against Australia

2005 – Last time before Peter Handscomb, an Australian got out hit-wicket in Tests was Shane Warne vs England at Edgbaston in 2005. Handscomb got out hit-wicket scoring 110 in the first innings.
