Australia vs England 2018: Jason Roy calls his knock 'incredibly special'
Roy went on to score a mammoth 180 runs off just 151 balls to take England to victory with five wickets to spare.
Team England will be relieved that the Ashes is over. The Test series didn’t turn out good for them as they failed to put up a fight. Joe Root’s conversion rates were questioned in the midst of several other issues with the English side. England were conquered 4-0 in the Ashes which clearly indicates that they did not have any answers posed by the Aussies.
The ODI series brought much promise and hope to the English fans. Players like Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan’s presence added the much-needed boost to the English side. The ODI XI is known to play aggressive cricket and score big runs. The allrounder Ben Stokes was still absent from the squad.
Firepower at the top
Australia finished strong in the first innings at the MCG. Aaron Finch played a fine knock of 107 that took the team total to 304. England started strongly and kept the Australians on the back foot from ball one. Roy went on to score a mammoth 180 runs off just 151 balls to take England to victory with five wickets to spare.
Roy was quoted as saying by BT Sport: “It’s incredibly special, I don’t really have too many words right now but it was just a huge honour to be out there for England again and get some runs on the board. It was a tough season last season so to be selected this time was incredibly special. But that was just a little blip in hopefully a long career.”
Roy broke the record held by his former opening partner Alex Hales who had scored a brutal 171 against Pakistan. The combination of Roy and Hales can be threatening for the opposition.
England have taken a 1-0 lead in the series. However, they must not get carried away as the Aussies are sure to come back stronger. With England as the opposition, teams always look to score 30-40 runs extra. They have got players who can single-handedly make a mockery of the big scores. Australian’s must not be too harsh on themselves as they were only few runs short of a great score.
