Australia vs India, 2018-19: 1st Test, Day 2 – Statistical Highlights
All the major stats and numbers from a slow second day in the Adelaide Test.
The Indian bowlers were successful in forcing the Australian batsmen to commit mistakes by bowling tight line and lengths on the second day’s play. As a result, the hosts could only make 191 for the loss of seven wickets after batting 88 overs. Travis Head’s unbeaten 61-run knock has narrowed the deficit to 59 runs with three wickets in hand. Earlier, India lost their final wicket on the very first ball of the second day to be bundled out for 250.
All the major stats and numbers from a slow second day in the Adelaide Test:
A first in 130 years:
6 – Shaun Marsh’s last six scores in Test cricket – 2, 4, 3, 0, 7, 7. He is the first Australian player in nearly 130 years to have registered six consecutive single-digit scores while batting in the top five.
Only George Bonnor (9) and Alec Bannerman (7) had longer such streaks than Shaun and both of it was recorded prior to 1888.
One ball:
1 – India lasted one ball on the second morning resuming at 250/9. This is the first instance for India and 7th for any team where they resumed the day nine down and were bowled out on the first ball.
Usman bloackathon:
22.4 – Usman Khawaja’s batting strike-rate of 22.4 during his 125-ball 28 is the slowest Test innings of 100+ balls by an Australian in more than 30 years. This is the slowest Test knock by an Australian since Merv Hughes’ 116-ball 16 at a strike-rate of 14.81 in the 1987 Sydney Test against England.
A rare poor start for Australia:
0 – With Aaron Finch getting out on the score of 0, 2018-19 became only the 6th home Test season where Australia lost a wicket before adding a run. Australia lost a wicket before scoring their first run in the 1928-29, 1950-/51, 1968-69, 2005-06 and 2009-10 home seasons in Test cricket.
2 – Aaron Finch is only the 2nd Australian opener to bag a duck in the first innings of a home Test series in the last ten years. Shane Watson faced the same fate in the 2009-10 home series against Windies.
2006 – The last instance when an Australian opener was bowled in the first over of the home Test innings before Finch was way back in 2006. The current Australian coach Justin Langer was bowled on the first ball of Australia’s second innings in the 2006 Perth Test match against England.
A new milestone for India’s spearhead:
50 – Ishant Sharma now has bagged 50 wickets in Test cricket against Australia. He is the 9th Indian to claim 50 Test wickets against the Aussies. Ishant is the 3rd Indian pacer after Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan to reach this milestone.
