Australia vs India, 2018-19: 3rd Test, Day 3 – Statistical Highlights

The position of the Melbourne Test match turned upside down with India claiming the advantage on the 3rd day that witnessed the fall of as many as 15 wickets. The Australians were bowled out for just 151 in their first innings as Jasprit Bumrah starred with a six-wicket haul. India decided to bat again after taking a 292-run first-innings lead. A pumped Pat Cummins removed four of India’s top four in the space of eight balls to leave them reeling at 32/4. India ended the day at 54/5 with a solid lead of 346 runs in hands.

Bumrah runs through Australian batting and record books:

4 – Jasprit Bumrah now has three five-wicket hauls; all in 2018 in three different countries – South Africa, England and Australia. He is the first visiting player and the 4th overall to bag a Test five-fer in South Africa, England and Australia in the same calendar year.

Australia’s Jack Saunders and Jack Gregory in 1902 and 1921 respectively while Shaun Pollock in 1998 had bagged a Test five-fer in the same year in these three countries. Gregory’s five-fer in Australia in 1921 came in a Test match that began on 31st December 1920.

6/33 – Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling figures are the 2nd best for an Indian pacer in a Test match in Australia. Kapil Dev had figures of 8/106 in the 1985 Adelaide Test.

45 – Number of wickets in Test cricket for Jasprit Bumrah in his debut year. These are the most number of Test wickets for an Indian in debut year surpassing Dileep Doshi’s 40 wickets in 1979.

A year to remember for the Indian bowlers:

247 – Number of wickets Indian bowlers claimed in Test cricket in 2018; the most by them in a calendar year. They bagged 245 wickets in the longer format in 1979 including the eight wickets they bagged in a Test match in 1979 that began in 1978.

Bumrah outshines Shami:

45 – The 45 Test wickets by Bumrah in 2018 are the most by an Indian away from home in a calendar year. Mohammed Shami’s 43 wickets find the second place in this list. Both the bowlers surpassed Anil Kumble’s 41 wickets outside India in 2006.

45 – Bumrah and Shami’s 45 and 43 Test wickets respectively in 2018 are the most in the list of Asian pacers with most Test wickets away from home in a calendar year. Imran Khan claimed 42 wickets outside Pakistan in 1977.

Mixed bag for Pujara:

4 – Cheteshwar Pujara scored a century and bagged a duck in the same Test match for the 2nd time. He was dismissed for a golden duck in the 2015 Colombo Test against Sri Lanka after remaining unbeaten on 145 in first innings.

He is the 4th Indian after Vijay Manjrekar, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag to score a century and duck in the same Test match on two different instances.

Pant continues to catch’em:

18 – The 18 catches taken by Rishabh Pant behind the stumps are the most by any Indian wicketkeeper in a Test series. He surpassed 17 catches taken by Syed Kirmani in the 1979/80 Test series against Pakistan and MS Dhoni in the 2014 England series.

A middle-order collapse:

1 – Aggregate of India’s No.3, 4 and 5 batsmen in the second innings is the joint lowest for them in a Test inning. They aggregated one run in the first innings of the 1953 Georgetown Test against the Windies.

3 – This was the 3rd instance of both Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli bagging ducks in the same innings. The duo was out for zero in the first innings of the 2014 Manchester Test and in the 2nd innings of this year’s The Oval Test. These three are the only instance of India’s No.3 and No.4 bagging ducks in the same Test innings since 1995.

6 – Runs India’s No.3, 4, 5 and 6 batsmen aggregated in the second innings; the joint fewest by them in a Test inning. India’s 3-6 in their batting order collected six runs in the first innings of the 1946 Manchester Test against England.
